Abstract

Moulds can be a common finding in forage. These moulds can be a health hazard for horses as some species can produce mycotoxins. Species without any known ability to produce mycotoxins can still pose a health risk as the spores can become airborne and inhaled by the horse which can cause equine asthma. Studies have shown that bales with visible mould on the surface also have higher fungal counts in parts of the bale without any visible mould. Mycotoxins have also been found in forage that is visibly free of mould in bales with visible mould on the surface.
In this study strategies by horse owners in Sweden at presence of mould in forage for horses was examined and what consequences these strategies could have on the horse’s health. The strategy used by most of the respondents was to discard forage with visible mould and feed the rest of the bale. This can be a health risk to the horses since the forage may contain mycotoxins and respirable particles.
How mycotoxins affect the horse is not fully known but studies have shown non-specific symptoms, although there are some known connections between mycotoxins and diseases. A big welfare problem in horses are the respirable particles that some species of mould produce which can cause equine asthma.
