Abstract

förändringar i kroppen.

As the yield of dairy cows has increased due to improved breeding strategies and better
management the production diseases have also remained active, especially at the time around
calving. At this time the cow is particularly exposed because she often suffers from negative
energy balance which can lead to physiological and biochemical changes in the body. This can
result in impaired production as well as make her more susceptible to diseases. This makes it
incredibly important to avoid this condition (Ingvartsen et al., 2001). This is also something that
can be prevented by the cows having a well-adapted dry period. The environment in which the
dry cows live must provide the cow with optimal conditions with good cow comfort, good feed
supply and feed quality. It is important that there is plenty of space for all animals both in terms
of lying area and feeding places. If the space is inadequate, it limits feed intake (Oetzel, 2015;
Caixeta et al., 2018). There should be good ventilation and preferably a cooling device
(Thompson et al., 2014).
There are divided opinions on how the length of the dry period affects the cow's health status.
There are positive and negative things with both choices. For example, a long dry period gives
the cow time for recovery while a short one can make it easier for her to maintain a good energy
balance (Maysari et al., 2017; Nilsson, 2019). The feed given to dry cows should have a low
energy content and it is important to keep in mind that the nutrient content is good. For dry
cows it is important to keep track of the CAB value. The CAB value stands for cat-an-ion balanceThis value indicates the balance between negative ions (cations) such as CL- and S2-, and positive
ions (anions) such as K+ and Na +. If there is an imbalance between these ions, it can affect the
cow’s health and production. (Nilsson, 2019).
The dry matter intake (the dry amount of material in the feed after complete drying) decreases
naturally around calving and this can be compensated by increasing the energy intake during the
latter part of the dry period. It also means that the cow is prepared for the feed she will be fed
after calving (Ingvartsen et al., 2001; Nilsson, 2019). It is also important that the dry cows have
access to clean water with good flow in water cups or tubs. The water should be evaluated
according to taste, smell, color, pH, impurities and solutes (Van Saun, 1991).
The cow can suffer from several different production diseases around calving and the time after.
Among these there is acetonemia, displaced abomasum, fatty liver, hypocalcemia, udder health
problems and fertility problems that can be caused by residual displaced placenta and uterine
inflammation. For all problems there is a common risk factor, negative energy balance. Thus, by
preventing just this all diseases mentioned in this paper are prevented. Of course, there are
specific actions for each problem but it is clear that they are all interconnected.
To investigate what it might look like on farms regarding management around dry cows a
questionnaire was sent out to milk producers who are users of Jo-Brink's feed system. The survey
highlighted that several of the participants had experienced that the herd gained better health
status when they prioritized and optimized the dry cow feed. This work began with the notion
that dry cows are often under-prioritized and that you can gain a lot of money by focusing on
management around them. It was also assumed that all problems that the cows can suffer from
during lactation can be prevented by the cows having a well-thought-out dry period. This is a
conclusion that has been drawn at the completion of the work, that there is great value in
preparing the cow in the best way for the following lactation through making the dry period as
good as possible.
