Abstract

Det här examensarbetet handlar om städernas obyggda mark och dess betydelse för barns fria lek. Det inkluderar en fördjupning av lek som fenomen och vikten av platser som tillåter interaktion. I arbetets innefattar även ett utforskande i hur dessa platser hotas av ett samhälle med stark tilltro till mätbara värden och fasta kategorier. Arbetet är av betydelse på grund av behovet att förse barn med platser där de kan utvecklas, samt att belysa vikten av olika typer av grönstrukturer för att bibehålla en mångfald bland det urbana landskapet. Under arbetet har en litteraturstudie av tidigare forskning och projekt genomförts, företrädare för kommuner har intervjuats, och en fallstudie i Hagsätra-Rågsved i Stockholm gjorts för att analysera hur kommunen hanterar de vilda platserna när staden utvecklas genom förtätning. Resultaten är betydelsen av lek, både för individen och samhället. Genom lekens förmåga att dekonstruera och rekonstruera ordningen, kan den utveckla både vårt intellekt och vår världsuppfattning. För att leken ska kunna vara kreativ och fri finns är platser bortom restriktioner och regler av betydelse. Stadens vilda mellanrum är den typen av plats. De har inte blivit exploaterade av staden och förkroppsligar därför inte samhällets värderingar genom en designad struktur, vilket gör att dessa platser öppnar upp för möjligheter. De skapar en miljö där barn kan interagera med sina omgivningar och leka med varandra bortom funktionsvariationer, ålders- och könsnormer. Dessa vilda mellanrum är sällsynta i en stad som domineras av byggda och anlagda ytor och dess existens hotas ytterligare av förtätning. Grönområdena minskar i täta städer och kravet på de resterande ökar. Detta leder till en parkifiering där de vilda mellanrummen anläggs för att uppfylla specifika krav. Arbetets främsta slutsats är att egenskaperna hos stadens vilda mellanrum har möjlighet att uppfylla flera artiklar i barnkonventionen, där rätten till lek är den främsta. Dessa platser kan ha flera sociala fördelar, men eftersom de inte presenteras i mätbara värden, tenderar de att förbises i stadens utveckling. Arbetet rekommenderar därför att vi lyfter de sociala värdena, särskilt de som har betydelse för barn, i utvecklingen av hållbara städer. Detta pekar på behovet av att förstå de dynamiska och omätbara värdena genom vilka både de vilda mellanrummen och den fria leken förstås.

The focus of this thesis is the cities´ unbuilt places and their significance for children’s free play. This includes a study of play as a phenomenon and the importance of spaces that allow interaction. This thesis also investigates how these spaces get threatened by a society that is developing through fixed categories and measurable values. This study is important because of the need to provide space for the children to develop and to raise the understanding of different types of green structures for the city to retain diversity in its landscape. Throughout this thesis a literature study of earlier research and projects has been conducted, representatives from the municipality have been interviewed, and a case study in Hagsätra-Rågsved in Stockholm has been made in order to analyze how the municipality is handling the unbuilt and wild places when developing a neighborhood through densification. The findings are the importance of play, both for the individual and the society. Through its’ possibility to deconstruct and reconstruct the order as we know it, it develops the mind and our understanding of things. There is a need for places beyond restrictions and rules for the play to be creative and free. The city’s wild gaps can provide this type of space. It has not been exploited by the city and therefore it does not embody its values through a designed structure, which leaves these wild gaps with possibilities and affordance. It provides a free space where children can explore and affect their surroundings, and play with each other beyond age-, disability-, and gender differences. These wild gaps become rare in an environment dominated by built structures, and its existence gets threatened further by the city’s densification. The green spaces are decreasing in dense cities, which raises the requirement for the remaining ones. This leads to a parkification where these wild gaps get built to fulfill the demands. The main conclusion drawn from this study is that the characteristic of the city’s wild gaps provides important qualities for children’s play and has the possibility to fulfill many articles in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The wild gaps could provide a lot of social qualities, but since they are not presented as measurable values, they tend to get overlooked in the development of the city. This thesis recommends that we raise the influence of social values, especially those that are important for children, in the development of sustainable cities. This points to the need of understanding the dynamic and unmeasurable values through which both the wild gaps and play could be understood.
