Abstract

For the dairy cows to have a well-functioning rumen, a feed mixture with materials with a high
fibre that stimulate ruminating is required. With a high supply of starch and a lower proportion
of fibre in the feed mixture, the amount of volatile fatty acids can increase in the rumen. This
can lead to a drop in the pH of the rumen and its microbes that take up the nutrients from the
feed can die from the more acidic environment. Subacute rumen acidosis (SARA) is a disease
that is triggered if the animal receives an excessively starchy feed with too little structure and
is an indication of a deteriorated rumen health. An important factor in the preventive measures
against ruminant acidosis is to feed with a sufficiently high proportion of fibre in the feed state,
which stimulates ruminating. During a ruminating time, the coarsest particles irritate the lining,
which leads to the ruminating process starting. Through a contraction, a feed ball is pushed up
and ruminated for about 40 seconds and then swallowed again. A bite is ruminated about 40 -
50 times and gives a very thorough breakdown of the feed. A normal ruminant period lasts for
about eight hours per day and the cow can produce between 100–200 litres of saliva. Saliva
contains buffering substances that lead to the pH value being at an even level in the rumen. If
the feed contains too little fibre, it can lead to the time the animal spends with ruminating can
be reduced because there are no particles that irritate to ruminate. Reducing the ruminant time
in turn reduces saliva production and the pH value can fall in the rumen and thereby lead to
subacute rumen acidosis.
A normal pH value should be between 6.2 - 6.7 for the microorganisms to thrive. However, it
is difficult to give an exact guideline value for which pH value leads to subacute rumen acidosis.
SARA can be defined as the pH value in the rumen being below pH 5.6 for more than three
hours per day.
It is difficult to detect if an animal has subacute rumen acidosis and SARA may also be behind
other problems or diseases in a herd. This means the animal's immune system is weakened as
the rumen health needs deteriorating which in turn makes the animal more susceptible to other
diseases. Some of the symptoms of rumen acidosis are that the animal gets a lower fat content
in the milk and that the milk yield can be reduced, there can also be unexplained miscarriages
and that calves are born prematurely. Some symptoms that can be seen are that the cows get
diarrhea and become generally depressed.
The study also included a survey that was posted on social media. The survey received 42
responses from milk producers around Sweden, based on the responses it was shown that there
was no major problem with rumen acidosis in Swedish herds. However, the disease is difficult
to detect with the naked eye, which led to an attempt to link the disease based on the different
responses with other feed-related diseases in the compilation. Something that was also
examined in the questionnaire was whether an addition of a buffering feed in the feed mixture
had a positive effect on the animals. This gave the answer that a larger proportion of the farmers
who used a buffering feed saw an improvement in the health of the animals and that it resulted
in increased milk production.
