Abstract

Som landskapsarkitekter skapar vi utemiljöer för människor. Vi förändrar och anpassar landskapet efter människans behov men hur vi förändrar landskapet och till vilken grad skiljer sig åt från projekt till projekt. Att anpassa ett landskap efter människans behov kan innebära att synliggöra det landskap som redan finns, men som inte syns för alla. Att genom enkla medel lyfta fram den plats som redan existerar och förstärka upplevelsen av den för besökaren. För att förstärka upplevelsen av en plats krävs god kännedom om den. God kännedom kräver i sin tur tid. Tid till att upptäcka platsen, för att uppleva landskapet, uppleva det genom våra sinnen och för att förstå landskapets ständiga förändring, en förändring som sker under timmar, dygn, månader och år.

Detta arbete är ett utforskande av platsen, av landskapet och hur tillförandet av enkla element kan möjliggöra en förstärkt upplevelse av det. Arbetet är utfört i naturmiljöer i Hågadalen-Nåstens naturreservat i Uppsala. Där har jag arbetat med tre platser som kontinuerligt har besökts under februari, mars, april och maj. Jag har upplevt naturen och platserna över tid. Jag har upplevt landskapets förändring från morgon till natt, vinter till vår och skapat mig en relation till dessa platser för att kunna förstärka upplevelsen av dem genom det jag tillför. Det jag har tillfört är designelement, ett till vardera plats, vilka uppmärksammar de olika platsernas karaktär och rumslighet. De tillåter besökaren att interagera med elementen och därigenom med platserna och möjliggör då en förstärkt upplevelse av dem. Designelementen synliggör platserna, ger besökaren möjligheten att ledas genom landskapet och exponeras för det, upptäcka och uppleva det.

Genom handskissen och att kontinuerligt besöka de valda platserna har jag utvecklat de designelement jag tillfört platserna. Jag har låtit mig styras av mina upplevelser på plats och av platsernas ständiga förändring. Det är subjektiva upplevelser av landskapet som har genererat tankar och idéer för hur jag kan förstärka och vidga andra människors subjektiva upplevande av dessa platser. I detta subjektiva blir platsen gemensam, att jag skapar möjligheter till en förstärkt upplevelse av den, men att det vi upplever kan skilja sig åt.

Arbetet har fått mig att inse hur god kännedom om en plats skapar grundläggande och nya förutsättningar för hur jag som landskapsarkitekt kan arbeta med den. Grundat i denna platskännedom har jag upplevt hur enkla tillägg kan skapa stora förändringar i hur vi upplever en plats. Ju mer jag vet om platsen, desto mindre behöver jag förändra. Konceptet i sig är inte beroende av just naturmiljöer utan kan appliceras i vilken miljö som helst. Det viktiga är inte vilken plats jag jobbar med utan kännedomen om den.

As landscape architects, we create outdoor environments for people. We change and adapt the landscape to human needs, but how we change the landscape and in what degree differs from project to project. Adapting a landscape to human needs can be to make the landscape that already exists visible. To highlight the place that already exists by simple means and enhance the experience of it for the visitor. To enhance the experience of a place, good knowledge of it is required. Good knowledge, in turn, requires time. Time to discover the place, to experience the landscape through one's senses and to understand the constant change of the landscape, how it changes in a couple of hours, during days, during months and years.

This work is an study of the place, of the landscape and how the addition of simple elements can enable an enhanced experience of it. The work is implemented in natural environments in the Hågadalen-Nåsten nature reserve in Uppsala. I have worked with three places that have been continuously visited during February, March, April and May. I have experienced nature and the places over time. I have experienced the change of landscape from morning to night, winter to spring and created a relationship with these places to be able to enhance the experience of them through the elements I add. What I have added are design elements, one for each place, which emphasizes the character and spatiality of the different places. They allow the visitor to interact with the elements and thereby with the places and enhance the sensual experience of them. The design elements make the places visible, give the visitor the opportunity to be guided through the landscape and to be exposed to it, to discover and to experience it.

Through the hand sketch and to continuously visit my selected places, I have developed the design elements I add. I have let myself be guided by my experiences and by the constant change of these places. It is through subjective experiences of the landscape that I have generated thoughts and ideas for how I can enhance and broaden other people's subjective experience of these places. In the subjective, the place is neutral. I create opportunities for an enhanced experience of the place, but that what we experience may differ.

The thesis has made me realize how good knowledge of a place creates essential but also new conditions for how I as a landscape architect can work with a place. Based on the knowledge of a place, I have experienced how simple additions can create major changes in how we experience it. The more I know about the place, the less I need to change. The concept itself is not dependent on natural environments but can be applied in any environment. The important thing is not what place I work with but the knowledge of it.
