Abstract

The main purpose of this master thesis is to investigate how to design a good outdoor environment for facilities catering to persons with special functional disabilities. The close environment is very important to individuals who for some reason have a need for assistance in their everyday life. This group has to a varying degree a more limited ability to travel to areas outside their immediate surroundings. Because of this it is of utmost importance that the immediate surroundings of these kinds of facilities are safe, available, and stimulating. Currently in Swedish law there are not any laws which advocate how the outdoor environments at these kinds of facilities are to be designed, except that they are to be physically accessible. It is up to the local municipality to design such guidelines if there are to be any.
This thesis starts with a presentation of the historical context of the role of the garden in health and social care facilities from ancient times to present day, as well as presenting some of the historical theories on the subject. Next in the thesis a short summary of parts of the modern science on related topics is presented, such as garden therapy, environmental psychology regarding outdoors environments, forest bathing, sensory gardens, and more. After that, the thesis introduces a selection of practical examples of facilities catering to persons with special functional disabilities where the outdoor environment has been thoughtfully adapted as a part of the operation or where a certain type of environment is being used with a therapeutic purpose.
In the thesis there is also a short evaluation of the outdoor environment of three facilities in Malmö which all have been a part of the project called Gröna Boenden. This is a project run by the city which aims to enhance the outdoor environment of facilities catering to persons with special functional disabilities as well as elderly care facilities. This evaluation was performed in cooperation with Kirsti Brunila Serviceförvaltningen in Malmö.
The last part of this thesis is a design for a specific garden at a facility catering to persons with special functional disabilities in Malmö. This design aims to apply the knowledge which has been compiled in the different parts of the thesis.
The conclusions that could be drawn from this thesis are that there is a lot of theoretical knowledge that can be applied to the design of outdoor environments at facilities catering to persons with special functional disabilities and that it is important that those in charge of designing the outdoor environment use the knowledge that staff at these facilities possess and try to tailor the outdoor environment to the conditions that exist at each individual facility. Based on the research and experience presented in this thesis, it is considered that there is good evidence that the quality of the immediate outdoor environment makes a difference to peoples’ mental and physical health, and also that users of these kinds of facilities generally have a great need for a high quality immediate outdoor environment.
