Abstract

I utvecklade länder tenderar efterfrågan för stapelvaror så som spannmål att minska. Detta är även gällande för konsumtionen av matpotatis. Till skillnad från spannmål har potatis ett högre värde per odlad hektar än spannmål. En minskad konsumtion av matpotatis kan ha en stor ekonomisk påverkan för de svenska lantbrukare som odlar matpotatis.
Ett sätt för lantbrukare att öka sina intäkter är att förflytta sina aktiviteter inom värdekedjan för att addera värde till sin produkt. När lantbrukarna genomför en sådan förflyttning upplever företaget tillväxt samtidigt som de möter nya marknader. Därför syftar denna studie till att öka förståelsen för vilka förflyttningar som ett sådant företag har möjlighet att genomföra inom värdekedjan. Studien syftar också till att öka förståelsen för vilka hinder som uppstår vid en förflyttning.
Denna studie indikerar att svenska lantbruksföretag har möjligheter att förflytta sina aktiviteter i flera olika riktningar. De vanligaste förflyttningarna har visat sig vara en utökning av den producerade arealen av matpotatis samtidigt som företagen väljer att sortera, tvätta och paketera produkterna.
De hinder som företagen upplevt under dessa förflyttningar härrör framförallt till brist på kapital för investering i åkermark, anläggningar och teknologi. Utöver detta upplever företagen att distribution och produktdiversifiering är hinder som kan påverka deras möjligheter att förflytta sig i värdekedjan. Då dessa hinder upplevts av samtliga respondenter finns det indikationer på att dessa hinder kan vara strukturella för denna marknad.

In developed countries, demand for staple goods such as cereals tends to decrease. This also applies to the consumption of food potatoes. Unlike cereals, potatoes have a higher value per hectare than cereals. Reduced consumption of food potatoes can have a major financial impact on Swedish farmers who grow food potatoes.
One way for farmers to increase their income is to move their activities in the value chain to add value to their product. When farmers make such a move, the company experiences growth while meeting new markets. Therefore, this study aims to increase the understanding of what transfers such a company is able to make within the value chain. The study also aims to increase the understanding of the obstacles that arise during a transfer.
This study indicates that Swedish agricultural companies have the opportunity to move their activities in several different directions. The most common movements have been found to be an increase in the area of food potatoes produced. Companies also choose to sort, wash and package the products.
The barriers experienced by the companies during these transfers are mainly due to a lack of capital for investment in arable land, facilities and technology. In addition, companies feel that distribution and product diversification are obstacles that can affect their ability to move in the value chain. Since these barriers were experienced by all respondents, there are indications that these barriers could be structural for this market.
