Abstract

I detta arbete undersöks temporär arkitektur och dess möjlighet att bidra till platsskapande och ökad aktivering av en plats. Platsen som utforskas är Bredäng Centrum och arbetet resulterar i en temporär gestaltning som kommer stå på platsen från 3 juni till sista september 2020. Bredäng Centrum är en plats som främst används som passage och det saknas platser att samlas på. För att stärka Bredäng som mötesplats används temporär arkitektur som anses vara ett enkelt och kostnadseffektivt sätt att på kort tid förändra en plats. Temporär arkitektur är relativt nytt inom offentlig planering men har de senaste decenniet kraftigt ökat. I Stockholm används temporär arkitektur för att levandegöra stadens offentliga rum under sommar- och vintermånaderna. Stockholms stad driver projektet Levande Stockholm där vissa platser under ett par månader får en ny gestaltning med syftet att öka aktiveringen samt användbarheten. Inom projektet görs sommargågator och pop up-parker i innerstaden och sommartorg i ett flertal förorter. Bredäng är en av de förorter som under sommaren 2019 för första gången fick ett sommartorg. Inför sommaren 2020 vill staden satsa mer på Bredäng och genom detta examensarbete har vi fått möjlighet att gestalta sommartorget i Bredäng Centrum. Syftet med arbetet är därför att skapa en gestaltning av temporära installationer för ett sommartorg i Bredäng Centrum under sommaren 2020 inom ramarna för projektet Levande Stockholm. Målet är att genom gestaltning stärka Bredäng som mötesplats och besvara följande frågeställningar:

- Hur kan vi som landskapsarkitekter bygga en relation till Bredäng Centrum, samt få en förståelse för platsens inneboende relationer?

- Hur kan Bredäng Centrum gestaltas med temporär arkitektur för att bidra till platsskapande och ökad aktivering av den offentliga miljön?

Arbetet består av tre huvudsakliga delar, en litteraturöversikt, en egen metod med namnet
Lära känna platsen samt gestaltningen. I litteraturöversikten undersöks och redovisas olika definitioner av platsskapande som sedan används genom arbetet för att diskutera och resonera kring hur, och om, den temporära gestaltningen i Bredäng bidrar till platsskapande eller inte. Vidare undersökt temporär arkitektur, dess funktion och användningsområden samt hur det används i Stockholms stad. Arbetets tyngsta del ligger i den egna metoden Lära känna platsen. Metoden består av observationer, samtal, möten, intervjuer, inventeringar, analyser, skissande och gestaltning. Genom metoden undersöks och besvaras den första frågeställningen. Arbetets tredje del är förslaget, resultatet av arbetet. Detta grundas i litteraturöversikten och Lära känna platsen med syfte att besvara den andra frågeställning. Arbetet avslutas med en diskussion om arbetets metoder samt resultatet och frågeställningarna. I denna del presenteras också förslag på framtida forskning och frågor som kommit upp under arbetet och vore intressanta att undersöka vidare.

This thesis explores temporary architecture and its potential to contribute to placemaking and increased activity at a site. The site being explored is Bredäng Centrum and the project results in a temporary design that will be located at the site from June 3rd until the end of September 2020. Bredäng Centrum is a place that is mainly used as a passage and there are no places to gather. In order to strengthen Bredäng as a meeting place, temporary architecture is used, which is a simple and cost-effective way to change a place in a short time. Temporary architecture is relatively new in public planning but has greatly increased in the last decade. In Stockholm, temporary architecture is used to bring the city’s public space to life during the summer and winter months. The City of Stockholm is running a project called Levande Stockholm (Living Stockholms), where different places receive a new temporary design for a couple of months with the aim of increasing activity and usability. Within the project, temporary pedestrian streets and pop-up parks are being made in the inner city and temporary squares in several suburbs, called summer squares. Bredäng is one of the suburbs that got a summer square in 2019. During 2020, the city wants to invest more in Bredäng and through this project we have been given the opportunity to design the summer square in Bredäng Centrum. The purpose of the work is therefore to design temporary installations for a summer square in Bredäng Centrum within the framework of Levande Stockholm. The aim is to strengthen Bredäng as a meeting place and answer the following questions:

- How can we, as landscape architects, build a relationship with Bredäng Centrum, and gain an understanding of the site’s inherent relationships?

- How can the Bredäng Centrum be designed with temporary architecture to contribute to placemaking and increased activity within the public environment?

This thseis consists of three main parts, a literature overview, a method called Getting to know the place (Lära känna platsen) and the design. In the literature overview, the concept of placemaking is investigated. The concept of placemaking is complex and what is or is not placemaking depends on which definition of the term you choose. The various definitions are used throughout the thesis to discuss if and how the temporary design in Bredäng contributes to placemaking or not. Furthermore, research about temporary architecture, its function and uses, as well as how it is used in Stockholm is presented. The heaviest part of the work lies in the method Getting to know the place. In placemaking theory an important part is people’s relationship to place. To investigate this a method to build a relationship between us and the site has been used. The method consists of observations, conversations, meetings, interviews, inventories, analyzes, sketching and design. The method examines and answers the first question. How can we, as landscape architects, build a relationship with Bredäng Centrum, and gain an understanding of the site’s inherent relationships? The third part of the thesis is the proposal and the result of the project. The result is based in the literature overview and Getting to know the place with the aim of answering the second question. The work concludes with a discussion of the methods of the work, the result and the issues. This section also presents suggestions for future research and issues that have come up during the work and would be interesting to investigate further.
