Abstract

The naturalistic perennial plantings associated with the New Perennial Movement originated in the 1980s, but its foundations can be traced back to the informal herbaceous borders of the Arts and Crafts gardens that were popularized during the late 1800s. The purpose of this work was to investigate differences and similarities between the naturalistic perennial plantings of the Arts and Crafts movement and contemporary New Perennial plantings. Through a literature study, the two movements were analysed from a landscape architectural perspective, with the intention of contextualizing the movements and investigating historical relationships between them. The analysis showed that the movements are united in their naturalistic ideal, which is expressed in both the design and the choice of plant material, while the main difference was shown that the movements were developed in two different contexts; Arts and Crafts in the private middle-class garden, and New Perennial in a public, large-scale context. Societal change and technological development are another two factors that distinguishes the two movements. The ecological approach of the naturalistic perennial plantings responds to needs in contemporary environmental and sustainability endeavours, suggesting that the movements are well positioned to continue to be influential in the future.
