Abstract

Parodontala sjukdomar och tandproblem är vanligt förekommande hos katter. Gingivit och tandresorption är exempel på sådana sjukdomar. För att undvika att tandproblem uppstår är det av stor vikt att utföra regelbunden profylaktisk tandvård. Detta i form av exempelvis tandborstning eller nyttjande av tandfoder. Personal inom djursjukvården spelar här en stor roll i informationsförmedlingen om ämnet till kattägare. Detta för att öka kunskap och därmed förbättra förekomsten av, samt utförande av profylaktiska åtgärder.

Syftet med detta kandidatarbete var att undersöka hur stor självuppskattad kunskap svenska kattägare har om katters tandhälsa, tandsjukdomar och profylaktisk tandvård. Arbetets syfte var även att undersöka i vilken utsträckning personal inom djursjukvården informerar om tandsjukdomar, symtom och profylaktisk tandvård för katter. Två enkätstudier genomfördes där två olika enkäter skickades ut; en till kattägare och en till personal på djursjukhus och djurkliniker. Även en litteraturöversikt genomfördes för att ge en bakgrund till ämnet angående vanliga tandsjukdomar samt profylaktiska åtgärder.

Resultatet från båda enkäterna visade att den kunskap kattägare har om tandproblem och symtom överensstämmer med vad personal inom djursjukvården informerar om. Resultatet visade även att drygt hälften av kattägarna utförde någon form av profylaktisk åtgärd, där tandborstning var den åtgärd som utfördes i högst grad. Tandborstning var även den åtgärd flest respondenter inom djursjukvården angav att de informerar om. Resultatet visade att informationsförmedlingen från personalen i största grad sker muntligt. Från enkäterna framgick det även att det kan ske förbättringar avseende kommunikation och följsamhet mellan parterna.

Periodontal diseases and dental problems are regularly occurring among felines. Gingivitis and tooth resorption are examples of such problems. To prevent these problems, it is of utmost importance to perform regular prophylactic dental care, for example; toothbrushing or the use of dental diets. Animal health care personnel have an important role in relaying information within the subject to cat owners. This is to increase knowledge and thereby improve the frequency and execution of dental prophylactic care.

The purpose of this bachelor thesis was to examine the amount of self-estimated knowledge Swedish cat owners have about dental health, dental diseases and prophylactic dental care in cats. The purpose of the study was also to examine whether animal health care personnel provide information about dental diseases, symptoms and prophylactic dental care for cats. Two survey studies were conducted where two different questionnaires were sent out, one to cat owners and one to personnel at animal hospitals and animal clinics. The literature review provides a background to the subject of common dental diseases as well as which prophylactic measures can be used to avoid periodontal diseases.

The results from the two surveys revealed that the knowledge cat owners have regarding dental problems and symptoms correspond to the information that animal health care personnel convey. The results also showed that roughly half of the cat owners performed dental prophylactic care for their cats, where toothbrushing was the most frequently used method. Toothbrushing was also the method which most respondents within the animal health care personnel recommended. The results showed that the information mediation between healthcare personnel and cat owners, for the most part, is carried out orally. The surveys also showed that there could be improvement regarding communication and compliance between the parties.
