Abstract

Intresset för stadsodling i Malmö är stort och det finns en mängd olika odlingsprojekt i staden, både med social och kommersiell inriktning. Detta arbete fokuserar på den kommersiella inriktningen och utgår ifrån projektet Stadsbruk som hjälpt många entreprenörer att starta upp sina odlingsföretag i staden. Arbetet är en genomgång och analys av de affärsmodeller och strategier som kan tänkas vara lämpliga för dessa företag med ekonomisk hållbarhet som mål. Fyra stycken företag baserade i Malmö har intervjuats och utgjort grunden för arbetet. Företagens strategier och affärsmodeller har jämförts med den teoretiska bakgrunden i vilken ​diversifiering
​ , ​differentiering
​ , ​lågkostnadsspecialisering
​ och social verksamhet
​ identifierats som vanligt förekommande strategier för stadsodlingsföretag. Det konstateras att differentiering är den strategi företagen främst tillämpar idag men att de har planer på att i framtiden även satsa på diversifiering. För att analysera företagens affärsmodeller har Business Model Canvas använts som mall och de olika komponenterna har identifierats för företagen. En gemensam sammanställning av komponenterna har gjorts och de diskuteras även var för sig. Studien har lett fram till ett antal rekommendationer och slutsatser gällande stadsodling. Som exempel nämns vikten av en effektiv produktion och möjligheter med att utöka samarbetet mellan odlarna. Företagen uppvisar inte idag ekonomisk hållbarhet men verkar vara på god väg dit. Med rätt affärsmodell och strategi så bedöms möjligheten att bedriva en lönsam grönsaksodling i staden vara god.

The interest in urban farming in Malmö is quite big and there is a variety of farming and gardening projects, which focus on both the social and commercial aspects of it. The focus of this thesis is on the commercial aspects and the project Stadsbruk which has helped many entrepreneurs to start their own urban farming businesses. The thesis is an analysis of the potential strategies and business models that could be suitable for these companies with focus on the economic viability. Four different urban farms have been interviewed and form the basis of the material for the thesis. Their strategies and business models are compared to the theory in which ​diversification, differentiation, low-cost specialisation
​ and​ social projects have been identified as common strategies for urban farms. It is shown that differentiation is the most common strategy among the interviewed companies but that they all have plans do diversify their businesses in the future. To analyze the business models Business Model Canvas has been used as a framework and the different components have been identified and discussed and a synthesis of the models have been made. The analysis and the comparison with the theory leads to a few conclusions and recommendations regarding commercial urban farming. For example, emphasis is put on having an efficient production system and investigating the possibilities to collaborate more with other farmers. The companies are not economically viable today but seem to be on good way. With the right business model and strategy the possibility of running a commercial urban farm is estimated to be good.
