Abstract

Studien behandlar ungdomars användande och behov av offentlig
utomhusmiljö i en svensk mellanstor stad. Med utgångspunkt i teorier
om människans samverkan med sin omgivning, undersöks ungdomars
plats- och meningsskapande i relation till deras trivsel och välbefinnande
på offentliga platser. Metoder utvecklas för att skapa en samlad bild av
ungas relationer till stadens platser från ett individuellt ungdomsperspektiv.
De metoder som används i arbetet är: fotodokumentation av spår efter ungas
platsaktiviteter, gruppsamtal, digital fotoenkät, samt en workshop med delmoment
utförda både i grupp och individuellt. Ungas platsanpassning behandlas i relation
till hur det offentliga rummets användande är reglerat, formellt och informellt.
Diskussionen lyfter vikten av ungas deltagande i planeringen och förslag ges
på inkluderande förhållningssätt, strategier och koncept, för att stödja ungas
plats- och meningsskapande i offentlig miljö. Studiens syfte är att bidra till en
socialt hållbar och gränsöverskridande samhällsutveckling, där en mer tillåtande
atmosfär och ett flexibelt användande av det gemensamma rummet kan främja
tillhörighet och delaktighet för alla individer, oavsett ålder.

This study examines adolescents’ use and need of public outdoor
space in a small Swedish town, and focuses specifically upon their
possibilities to experience well-being in public spaces. Grounded
in the theoretical underpinnings of human collaboration with the
environment, young people’s place and meaning-making activities,
their physical interaction with the environment, and the purpose of
these actions are investigated. Methods are developed, with the aim
to provide a thick description of youths’ use of, and relation to public
space, from an individual youth perspective. The methods used in the
study are; photographic documentation of traces of youths´place-
activities, group conversation, digital photo survey, and a workshop
containing both group- and individual tasks. Young individuals’ use of
place and place-altering, are related to the formal and informal regulations
of how public space is used. The discussion focuses on youth participation
and empowerment in planning. Suggestions, strategies and concepts that
could support their place- and meaning-making activities in public space
are introduced at this point. The purpose of the study is to contribute to
a socially sustainable and boundary-breaching planning of public space,
that can support a more flexible use of the places that we share, so that
everyone, regardless of age, can feel a sense of belonging.
