Abstract

Detta examensarbete undersöker en experimentell design inom landskapsarkitektur med begränsningen att enbart använda sten, vatten och metall. Genom att analysera och djupdyka ner i personliga platser från författarnas uppväxt diskuteras möjligheterna för att skapa ett experimentellt offentligt rum som kan uppfattas som en “god plats” vid Hamnplan, Uppsala. Att skapa en “god plats” är för en landskapsarkitekt en svårlöst uppgift, då det innefattar att definiera vad det subjektivt goda är. I jakten på att definiera och förstå det subjektiva och goda utforskar det här examensarbete gränserna för det moderna och tabubelagda. Genom att begränsa designförslaget med enbart sten, vatten och metall syftar studien till att belysa experimentella möjligheter som inte vanligtvis ses i dagens offentliga utformningar inom landskapsarkitektur. Genom att analysera fysiska platser som har starka personliga kopplingar uppstår frågor om vad det är som kan betraktas som det goda på en plats och hur etiskt lämpligt det är för landskapsarkitekter att skapa offentliga platser med estetik utifrån subjektiva preferenser. För att nå fram till ett slutförslag studerades nyckelfunktioner och element från personliga goda platser för att bättre förstå vad det är som gör en plats att god och funktionell i en offentlig miljö. Illustrationer, skisser, 3D-modellering och fysisk modellering har genom hela examensarbetets gång haft en nyckelroll för att skapa den slutliga designen. Arbetets resultat är en produkt av flera element och karaktärer härledda från subjektivt ansedda goda platser med hjälp av välkända analysmetoder som till exempel Jan Gehls “Criteria of quality”, Ian Thompsons “Tri-valent design” och Simon Bells “Elements of visual design”. Avslutningsvis uppmärksammar diskussionen vilken typ av plats den slutliga utformningen av Hamnplan faktiskt är och hur väl den personliga grunden för arbetet lyckats skapa en god funktionell design i centrala Uppsala.

This study investigates an experimental design within landscape architecture with a limitation of only using stone, water and metal. By analyzing and delving into personal places from the authors' up-bringing, the study discusses the possibilities of creating an experimental public space that can be considered a “good place” at Hamnplan, Uppsala. To create a "good place" is a difficult task for a landscape architect if and because the "good" that is based on personal experiences has to be made explicit. In order to do so, this study explores the borders of a professional tabu and of the modern, spurring the imagination with alternative uses of materials and outlooks on the functional. By limiting the design proposal with solely stone, water and metal, the study aims to highlight experimental possibilities not commonly seen in current day designs and implementations within landscape architecture. When analyzing physical places that correlates to the utmost personal, questions regarding what it is that could be regarded “good” arise and how ethically appropriate it is for landscape architects to create public places with aesthetics from subjective preferences. Throughout the study, key functions and elements from personal places are studied in order to better understand what makes a place preferable and functional in a public setting. When re-imagining Hamnplan, illustrations, sketches, 3D-modelling and physical modelling played a key role in crystalizing the final design. Moreover, the final design proposal is the result of creating elements and a recreation of character derived from an investigation of the subjectively “good” with the aid of well-known analytical methods and criteria such as Jan Gehl's “Criteria of quality”, Ian Thompson’s “Tri-valent design” and Simon Bell’s “Elements of visual design”. In the end, the concluding discussion draws attention to what type of place the final design of Hamnplan actually is, and how well the personal foundation for inspiration managed to create a good functional design in central Uppsala.
