Abstract

På grund av en sedan länge pågående urbaniseringstrend förväntar vi oss att städer kommer att växa. Därför värderas stadsranden, alltså zonen mellan stad och land, utifrån dess framtid snarare än för vad den kan bidra med idag. Målet med den här uppsatsen är att undersöka stadsrandens potential att rymma värden knutna till hållbar stadsutveckling i syfte att hitta värden som inte uppmärksammats tidigare. Detta för att stödja en gynnsam relation mellan stad och land samt för att klargöra stadsrandens roll i planering, gestaltning och förvaltning av en hållbar stad. Det görs dels genom en litteraturstudie och dels genom en referensstudie av stadsranden i Stockholm.

Begreppet hållbarhet hanterar på olika sätt en ekologisk, en social och en ekonomisk dimension som alla samverkar till en utveckling som inte äventyrar kommande generationers möjligheter att tillfredsställa sina behov. Resultatet av studien visar att det finns sociala och ekologiska värden knutna till stadsrandens landskap som bidrar till den sociala och ekologiska dimensionen av hållbar stadsutveckling. Därtill erbjuder stadsranden potential för värden som är hotade i staden såväl som på landsbygden. En jämförelse mellan referensstudien och litteraturstudien tyder på att stadsrandens fulla potential kanske inte tas tillvara på i planeringen. Därtill tyder resultaten på att stadsranden behöver hanteras som helhet utan administrativa gränser, där fula såväl som sköna områden tillåts bidra till den hållbara staden.

Because of the trend of urbanization, which has been going on for many years, we expect cities to grow. Therefore the zone between city and county, the urban fringe, is being valued based on its future rather than what it can contribute with today. The aim of this study is to examine the urban fringes potential to contain values that supports a sustainable urban development, with the purpose of finding values that has not been brought to attention earlier. This is to support a favourable relationship between city and countryside and to determine the urban fringes roll in the planning, designing and the management of a sustainable city. This is done partly by a literature study and a partly by a case study of the urban fringe in Stockholm.

The concept of sustainability manages in various ways an ecological, a social and an economic dimension that interacts to a development that does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The results of the study shows that there are social and ecological values in the urban fringe that can contribute to the social and the ecological dimension of a sustainable urban development. In addition, the urban fringe contributes with potential values that are threatened is both the city and the countryside. A comparison between the literature study and the case study indicates that the urban fringes full potential is perhaps not being used in urban planning. The results of the study also indicates that the urban fringe needs to be seen as a whole structure without administrative boundaries, were unattractive areas as well as attractive ones is being allowed to contribute to the sustainable city.
