Abstract

I undersökningar anger de flesta europeiska konsumenter att produktionsdjurens välfärd är viktig. Inhysningssystemet har en direkt påverkan på välfärden hos värphönor. Huruvida ett visst inhysningssystem ger förutsättningar för en god välfärd eller ej påverkas av många olika faktorer, och respektive faktor kan dessutom påverka flera aspekter av välfärden. Inredning som sittpinne, värprede och ströbad är lagstadgade i Sverige och ska således finnas oavsett inhysningssystem. Dessa tillgodoser vissa grundläggande aspekter av hönornas naturliga beteenden. Hur denna inredning är beskaffad skiljer sig dock mellan systemen, såväl som andra förhållanden. Frigående system ger en ökad rörelsefrihet och bättre möjligheter för till exempel födosök och sandbad, medan inredda burar ger mindre skador, mindre sjukdomar, bättre luftkvalitet och en bättre social kontext. Det finns förbättringspotential för båda systemen. För att uppnå en bättre välfärd kan en särskild djurvälfärdscertifiering vara ett första steg på vägen, eftersom en lagändring under rådande omständigheter skulle vara problematisk.

When asked in investigations, most European consumers agree that the welfare of the production animals is important. The welfare of laying hens is directly affected of the housing system. There are several features of the housing system that can influence the welfare, and each feature can have multiple effects. Furnishing like perches, nest and dust bath are required by Swedish law and are therefore compulsory regardless of housing system. They fulfil some basic aspects of the behavioural needs of the hens. However, how the furnishing is designed differs between the systems, as well as other conditions. Loose housing systems allows more mobility and better opportunities to e.g. forage and dustbathe, while furnished cages gives less injuries, less diseases, better air quality and a better social context. There are potential for improvements in both systems. To improve the welfare an animal welfare-certification could be the first step, since a law change under the prevailing circumstances would be problematic.
