Abstract

Kommunikationen med djurägare kring avlivning påverkar djurägarens compliance med den rekommenderade behandlingen, vilket gör det särskilt viktigt att kommunikationen kring behandlingen fungerar i fall som involverar djurskyddsaspekter. Inom yrket djursjukskötare finns en skyldighet att sätta djurets välmående och djurskyddsaspekter i första hand vilket kräver en god kommunikativ förmåga kring dessa ämnen.

En enkätundersökning utformades med syftet att undersöka djursjukskötarnas upplevelser kring kommunikation om avlivning med djurägare och om de ansåg att utrymmen för förbättrad utbildning kunde ses. En litteraturöversikt gjordes som bakgrund för enkätstudien. Enkätundersökningen bestod av 13 frågor och vände sig till yrkesverksamma legitimerade djursjukskötare inom svensk djursjukvård.

Enkätstudiens resultat visade att majoriteten i huvudsak hade lärt sig att kommunicera kring ämnet genom praktisk övning snarare än teoretisk utbildning, och majoriteten ansåg att mer utbildning för alla yrkesutövare behövs. De flesta upplevde sällan bristande djurägarcompliance och majoriteten upplevde inte heller negativa känslor inför kommunikationen med djurägaren i någon större utsträckning. De flesta hade inte deltagit i någon kommunikationsutbildning. Majoriteten av respondenterna hade en yrkeserfarenhet på tio år eller mer. Ett större antal frivilliga fritextsvar lämnades som uttryckte empatiska känslotillstånd för både djuret och djurägaren, samt uttryckte åsikter om vikten av utbildning och övning för god kommunikation. Vid en jämförelse av resultat från olika grupper visade det sig att respondenter med större egen erfarenhet av avlivningssamtal i högre grad värderade praktisk övning över teoretisk utbildning. Respondenter med mindre erfarenhet valde istället oftare kombinationen av teoretisk och praktisk utbildning. Respondenterna som examinerats år 2011 eller senare uppgav oftare än övriga grupper egen erfarenhet av djurägande som mest relevant för att kommunicera kring avlivning. Utifrån diskussionen dras slutsatsen att ytterligare forskning på ämnet behövs.

The communication with owners regarding euthanasia influences owner compliance with the recommended treatment, which makes the communication regarding treatment especially important in cases that involve aspects of animal welfare. Veterinary nursing includes an obligation to prioritize the wellbeing of animals and animal welfare above other aspects, which demands proper communicational skills regarding these subjects.

A survey was designed to examine the veterinary nurses’ experiences regarding communication about euthanasia with pet-owners and if they could identify aspects for educational improvement regarding these issues. A literary review was made as a theoretical background for the survey. The survey consisted of 13 questions. The study targeted working registered veterinary nurses in Swedish animal health care.

The results of the survey showed that most of the respondents learned how to communicate regarding euthanasia mainly through practice rather than theoretical education, and that the majority thought that more education is needed throughout the occupational group. Most of the respondents rarely experienced owner non-compliance, and most of them did not experience any negative emotions when communicating with the owner regarding euthanasia. Most of the respondents had no specific education in communication regarding euthanasia, and a majority had work experience exceeding ten years. The survey received a large number of free text answers which expressed empathic feelings towards both the animal and its owner. There were also a number of expressed opinions about the importance of education and practice to ensure proper communication. A cross-examination of results from different groups of respondents shows that most respondents with great experience of talking to owners about euthanasia chose practice over theoretical education. Respondents with less experience instead chose the combination of practice and theoretical education more often. The respondents who earned their degree after 2011 considered their own experience as pet owners as the most valuable quality for communicating about euthanasia more often than the other groups. The discussion concludes that further studies of the subject, same type surveys with a greater number of respondents and meta studies are needed.
