Abstract

Uppsatsen avhandlar den konstnärliga utsmyckningen av Stockholms tunnelbana och undersöker dess funktion ur resenärernas perspektiv. Vilken betydelse konsten har och hur den påverkar människorna som befinner sig i rummen med konstnärlig utsmyckning. Nästintill alla av tunnelbanans 100 stationer har idag konstnärlig utsmyckning. I planeringen av att tillföra konst i tunnelbanan stod konstnärskåren som mest drivande i frågan. Motivet till utsmyckningen av stationerna var både estetiskt och ideologiskt. De ursprungliga tankarna cirkulerade kring konstens möjlighet att forma och lätta upp de underjordiska rummen, vara tidsfördriv och i ett demokratiskt anseende göra konsten tillgänglig för hela befolkningen. Genom intervjuer med tunnelbaneresenärer undersöktes konstens påverkan på tunnelbanans rum och dess resenärer. Studien visar på att konstens funktion och betydelse för resenärerna både är estetisk och rumsskapande, den fungerar identitetsskapande för de olika stationerna såväl som viktig för resenärernas upplevelse av resandet i tunnelbanan, för upplevelsen av rummen och som tidsfördriv i väntan på tågen. Men dess viktigaste funktion är konstens värde i sig, dess estetiska värden och förmåga att kritisera samhällsnormer.

The essay deals with the artistic decoration of Stockholm's subway and investigates its function from the perspective of the travelers. Which impact the art has on the people whom finds themselves in those rooms. Almost all of the Metro's 100 stations have artistic decorations. In the planning of art in the subway, the artist was the most driving force in the matter. The motif of the embellishment of the stations was both aesthetic and ideological. The original thoughts circulated around art's ability to shape and lighten the underground spaces, act as pastime and in a democratic sense make art accessible to the entire population. Through interviews with metro passengers, the influence of art on the subway space and its travelers was investigated. The study shows that the art's function and importance to the traveler is both aesthetic and space-creating, it works identifying the different stations as well as important for travelers' experience of traveling in the subway, for the experience of the rooms and as pastimes waiting for the trains. But its most important function is the value of art itself, its aesthetic values and ability to criticize social norms.
