Abstract

Platser och hur vi ser på dem är utgångspunkten i vårt arbete som landskapsarkitekter. Vi skapar, ritar om, lägger till, förstärker eller tar bort på dessa platser. På så sätt ansvarar vi för de miljöer människor vistas i, vare sig det är torg, bostadsgårdar, parker eller naturområden. Som vi arbetar, med tidsramar i projekt, budget, krav och ett fåtal platsbesök, medför ofta begränsningar i hur vi hinner lära känna dessa platser. Att arbeta förutsättningslöst och undersökande med platser med en konstnärlig utgångspunkt och i syfte att undersöka dessa utan att fokus ska ligga på ett resultat eller färdig produkt kan öppna upp för nya sätt att se på platser. Genom att ha skapandeprocessen i fokus och inte resultatet kan vi få nya tankar för hur vi förstår en plats och vår relation till den.

Detta arbete är en konstnärlig undersökning av fem platser i Hågadalen. Arbetet har en tydlig utgångspunkt i den brittiske konstnären Andy Goldsworthys arbetssätt. Goldsworthy är verksam inom ett område som brukar kallas Land art där landskapet är i fokus och ingår som en aktiv komponent i verken, snarare än en bakgrund eller representation som tidigare i konsthistorien. Goldsworthys metod är platsundersökande och intuitionsdriven och han arbetar endast med material som finns på en plats. Syftet med arbetet har varit att genom ett praktiskt konstutövande förstå ett landskap och min relation till det. Jag har undersökt platser jag varit på utifrån mig själv och utifrån platsen. Dagen, tidpunkten och mitt eget sinnestillstånd har spelat roll, alltså är det ett personligt arbete på det sättet. I och med att arbetet är intuitivt så blir det även mina känslor och infall som styr vad som kommer att hända. I detta arbete har Goldsworthys arbetsprocess studerats och analyserats i en förstudie där fem tillvägagångssätt har identifieras: Platsen, intuition, samlande, skapande och dokumenterande. Dessa har sedan tillämpats genom praktiskt arbete på fem platser i Hågadalen utanför Uppsala. Det praktiska arbetet innebar att jag har utifrån Goldsworthys arbetssätt har skapat små, tillfälliga verk i Hågadalen. Jag har konstruerat dessa med material jag har hittat på platsen jag har varit på och alla dessa har på så sätt skapats utifrån platsens egna förutsättningar men också utifrån platsen förutsättningar just under dagen jag har varit där. Jag har sedan dokumenterat dessa genom fotografi och de redovisas i arbetet som resultat tillsammans med reflektioner över platserna och hur min förståelse av dessa har fördjupats.

Places and the way we approach them is the foundation of our work as landscape architects. On these places we can create new things, re-draw them altogether, enhance traits we find or strip away things we don’t think add to the desired character of the place. In this way we are responsible for many of the environments people move in, whether they are squares, parks or recreation areas. Landscape architects often work as consultants and the way we work and the belonging limitations consisting of time frames, budgets and demands often lead to a limited time spent on the places we work with, consequently this might give us a limited understanding of these places. If we, instead, approach a place with no prior ideas of what or how something should be we can look at the places we work with from another angle. By focusing on the creative process and not the result when visiting a place we can receive ideas and new ways of how we understand the place and our relationship to that place.

The purpose of this thesis is how I through artistic, practical work outside can understand a landscape and a place and my own relationship to that place. The thesis begins in the work of British artist Andy Goldsworthy as a method of understanding how to work with the land in a different way. Goldsworthy’s work is usually categorised as Land art, where the landscape works as an active component of an artwork. Goldsworthy’s method is investigative and driven by intuition and he works almost solely with materials that he finds in the landscape. In this thesis, Goldsworthy’s process was studied and five aspects to his work was identified: The place, intuition, collecting/gathering, creating and documenting. These aspects were then applied through practical work in five places in Hågadalen in Uppsala. I explored the five places through the landscape in which they take form but also through myself. The day, the time of day and my own mindset in that particular moment has mattered in this study. The intuitive approach also permits the process to be run by feelings and notions, therefore it is a very personal work. The practical work took form in small temporary installations or sculptures made from materials found in Hågadalen. All works where documented with photographs and later reflected on. The photographs, what I experienced on the places and thoughts about this is shown in the result of the thesis. It is also these thoughts and my relationship to the place that is the focus of the discussion and the heart of this thesis: How this way of working with these places has deepened my understanding of them and the understanding of my relationship to the places and how, if we give something of ourselves and our time to the places we work with, we might get something of the place back in return.
