Abstract

I Sverige råder det idag en läkemedelsanvändning som resulterar i en negativ miljöpåverkan. Den största negativa miljöpåverkan från läkemedel i Sverige uppstår vid kundernas användning av läkemedel. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) är ett koncept som beskriver företags samhällsansvar och bidrag till en hållbar utveckling. Tidigare studier kring CSR-arbete inom läkemedelsindustrin har främst fokuserat på producenter. Detta har lett till att apoteken i rollen som mellanhand mellan producent och konsument inom läkemedelsindustrin är en understuderad aktör kring hållbarhetsarbete. Syftet med denna studie är således att undersöka och belysa apotekens roll och ansvar för en mer hållbar läkemedelsanvändning utifrån ett CSR-perspektiv.

Studiens teoretiska ramverk utgörs av legitimitetsteorin, intressentmodellen och Carrolls CSR-pyramid. Det teoretiska ramverket används för att svara på studiens syfte och forskningsfrågor. En kvalitativ forskningsstrategi i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer har legat till grund för insamlingen av studiens empiri.

Studien visar att apotekens nuvarande roll och ansvarstagande kring en mer hållbar läkemedelsanvändning beror på den upplevda legitimiteten från samhället och dess intressenter. Apoteken ser information som det främsta verktyget i att kunna bidra till en mer hållbar läkemedelsanvändning vilket förklaras av deras direkta och dagliga kontakt med kunderna. Genom detta får apoteken den legitimitet som krävs för fortsatt verksamhet och företagets intressenter tillfredsställs. Vidare visar studien att apotekens CSR-arbete är direkt kopplat med dess kärnverksamhet. Hållbarhetsarbetet är därför högt prioriterat inom de tre apoteken som studerats och utgörs främst av att informera i en större utsträckning än vad lagen kräver.

Today in Sweden there is an increasing negative impact on the environment from the use of pharmaceuticals. This negative impact generally occurs when people consume pharmaceuticals. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a concept to describe a corporate’s work to improve the social environment to the better. This could for example mean that a corporation try to improve the surrounding environment by the means that is necessary. Earlier studies regarding CSR on the pharmaceutical industry are mainly focused on the producers and not the intermediary actors, the so-called pharmacies. Due to this, the scientific research is lagging when it comes to how pharmacies work and take responsibility for a better use of pharmaceuticals. The aim of this paper is therefore to shed light on how pharmacies take responsibility as well as work towards a more sustainable consumption of pharmaceuticals through a CSR perspective.

The study will use a theoretical framework based on legitimacy theory, stakeholder theory and the pyramid of Corporate Social Responsibility by Carroll. Data gathered from semi-structured interviews will be used to address the aim of the paper. This will be in line with the qualitative approach of the study.

The study finds that the pharmacies see legitimacy and its stakeholders as two key factors when it comes how to take responsibility and work towards a more sustainable pharmaceutical consumption. Information is also acknowledged by the pharmacies as the main tool towards that objective due to the daily and direct communication with their customers. By working with information towards their customers the pharmacies get the legitimacy and approval from stakeholders for continued business. Furthermore, the study finds that working to reduce the negative impact from pharmaceuticals is a part of the pharmacies core activity. The work is therefore highly prioritized and goes beyond what the law requires.
