Abstract

Bland många landskapsarkitektstudenter råder det en otydlighet kopplad till yrkesrollen. Studenter behöver ta del av olika resonemang kring landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll för att göra sig en egen, tydlig bild av denna. Parallellt med detta råder det idag spekulationer på att studenterna på landskapsarkitektutbildningen består av en homogen grupp. Syftet med detta arbete är att undersöka vilka landskapsarkitektstudenterna är och vad landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll innebär. Målet är att förtydliga landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll samt ge ett svar på om det råder bristande mångfald bland studenter på landskapsarkitektprogrammet eller inte. Arbetet ska leda till ett utkast av ett häfte som presenterar landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll genom att visa upp delar av arbetets resultat på ett strukturerat och illustrerat vis. Häftet vänder sig till nyantagna landskapsarkitektstudenter och kan delas ut i samband med introduktionskursen på landskapsarkitektprogrammet. För att uppnå syftet gjordes en litteraturstudie, skriftliga intervjuer med ett urval av anställda på institutionerna för landskapsarkitektur på SLU, en enkätstudie riktad till samtliga landskapsarkitektstudenter, åtta intervjuer med landskapsarkitektstudenter och yrkesverksamma landskapsarkitekter samt ett häfte. Häftet var ett sätt för mig att strukturera upp det empiriska materialet och sammanfatta de kunskaper jag har fått av att göra arbetet. Resultatet visar att en klar majoritet av landskapsarkitektstudenter och landskapsarkitekter står på en gemensam grund som utgörs av den generella uppfattningen att landskapsarkitekten är en god kraft i samhället som vill förbättra miljöer för människor och natur. Resultatet visar också att det finns många olika synsätt på landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll och att bilden man har kan vara skiftande, svårdefinierad och innefatta mycket. Det finns inte bara en bild av vad en landskapsarkitekt är. Det är upp till var och en att forma sig till den landskapsarkitekt man vill vara. Ur enkätstudiens resultat går det att anta att landskapsarkitektstudenterna är en homogen grupp då de flesta är likartade vad gäller kön, ålder och härkomst och har liknande socioekonomiska bakgrunder med hänseende till arbetserfarenhet, tidigare utbildning, föräldrars utbildningsnivå, boendeform och uppväxtplats. Resultatet visar att en ökad mångfald behöver uppnås bland studenterna. En större mångfald skulle innebära att fler perspektiv, erfarenheter och kunskaper kan delas. Häftet som utformats sammanväver resultatet av litteraturstudien, enkätundersökningen och intervjuerna på ett lättbegripligt och illustrativt sätt. Häftet visar olika aspekter på landskapsarkitektens yrkesroll, belyser frågan om mångfald bland studenter på utbildningen och agerar som ett stöd för studenter i deras vidare reflektioner kring rollen som landskapsarkitekt.

There is an uncertainty connected to the professional role of the landscape architect amongst many landscape architecture students. A deep understanding of the role of the landscape architect is something students should strive for because it can lead to a greater confidence during the time on the programme. At the same time there are speculations about how the landscape architecture students seem to consist of a homogenous group of people. The aim of this thesis is to examine who the landscape architecture students are and what the professional role of the landscape architect means. The goal for this thesis is to contribute to a clarification of the professional role of the landscape architect and give an answer to whether there is an insufficient diversity amongst students at the landscape architecture programme or not. The thesis is to lead to a draft of a booklet that presents the professional role of the landscape architect by showing parts of the result from the thesis in a structured and an illustrative manner. The booklet is directed at newly accepted landscape architecture students and could be handed out during the introductory course at the landscape architecture programme. To achieve the aim of the thesis a literature study was made, written interviews with employees of the institutions of landscape architecture at SLU were conducted, a survey was sent to all students at the landscape architecture programme and a total of eight interviews were made with landscape architecture students and practicing landscape architects. The booklet was made additional to this. The results show that most of the landscape architecture students and landscape architects stand on a common ground that is made of the perception that the landscape architect is a force of good in society that wants to improve environments for people and nature. The results show that there are different ways to view the professional role of the landscape architect. The image that one has of the role can be changing, hard to define and include a lot. There is not one solitary picture of what the role of a landscape architect is. It is up to everyone to shape themselves to be the landscape architect they want to be. Based on the result of the survey one can conclude that the landscape architecture students are a homogenous group. A majority are uniform when it comes to gender, age and origin and most students appear to have similar socioeconomic backgrounds based on work experience, prior education, education level of the parents, housing form and place of upbringing. The result shows that an increase of diversity amongst the students at the programme is to strive for. A larger diversity would mean that a wider range of perspectives, experiences and knowledge can be shared amongst the students. The thesis formed the content of the booklet which intertwines the results of the literature study, the survey and the interviews in an illustrative manner. In that way the booklet presents different reasonings about the professional role of the landscape architect, sheds light on questions regarding diversity amongst students and acts as a support for students in their further reflections about their roles as landscape architects.
