Abstract

Idéen till det här arbetet är sprungen ur mina egna observationer av att vegetationen i nya parker och offentliga rum verkar utformas och betraktas som statiska element som lämnar litet till inget utrymme för oväntade händelser såsom mekaniska skador eller klimatförändringar.

Som landskapsarkitekt har du möjlighet att fördjupa dina kunskaper i hur vegetationens dynamik kan användas för att skapa långsiktiga, robusta planteringar som förändras över tid och ger nya upplevelser. Detta kan göras med hjälp av landskapsplanteringar. Historiskt sett har landskapsplanteringar framgångsrikt använts för att skapa rekreationsmiljöer i stadens ytterkanter. Sett i ett urbant sammanhang skulle dessa typer av planteringar ställas inför andra krav och situationer. Att använda sig av landskapsplanteringar i en urban kontext ger oss landskapsarkitekter en möjlighet att utforska nya sätt att använda landskapsplanteringar.

Under det senaste decenniet har förtätning och urbanisering lett till att industriområden omvandlats till bostadsområden. Denna trend har givit landskapsarkitekter utmaningen att skapa nya gröna platser och utrymmen för människor i miljöer präglade av industri. I Göteborg pågår för närvarande stora omvandlingar i före detta industriområden kring Göta älv. I ett av dessa områden, Frihamnen, ska en stor stadspark byggas, Jubileumsparken. I det här arbetet redovisas ett gestaltningsförslag där landskapsplanteringar används i Jubileumsparken.

Gestaltningsförslaget togs fram via förstudie, gestaltning och presentationsarbete. I förstudien genomfördes en dokumentstudie, en litteraturstudie och en studieresa. Den gav information och insikter om den valda platsen och generella kunskaper om landskapsplanteringar. Genom en gestaltningsprocess uppdelad i flera moment utformades sedan Jubileumsparken. Samtliga moment mynnade ut i ett övergripande gestaltningsförslag där teori kring landskapsplanteringar tillämpades på parken med avseende på utformning och uppbyggnad av vegetationen ur ett 50-årsperspektiv. Under presentationsarbetet togs material fram som presenterar och förklarar den slutgiltiga gestaltningen för läsaren.

Resultatet är en park uppbyggd av landskapsplanteringar som fokuserar på vegetationens långsiktiga utveckling. I parken används fem olika artblandningar som relaterar till dess olika delar. Förslaget presenterar parkens målbild för år 50, och hur de olika artblandningarna formas på vägen dit.

I diskussionen lyfts bland annat problematiken kring att designa något som har en lång genomförandetid. På de femtio år som det tar för förslaget att nå sitt slutgiltiga utseende kan mycket hända som påverkar utvecklingen, till exempel klimatförändringar, ändrade planer för utbyggnadsförlopp samt skiften inom skötselpersonal på kommunen. Förändring av ursprungsdesignen är dock förväntad, och användningen och uppbyggnaden av landskapsplanteringarna gör parken formbar för framtiden.

The idea for this thesis was formed by own personal observations of modern parks. The vegetation in new parks and public space seems to be designed and thought of as static elements, leaving little to no room for unexpected events such as mechanical damage or climate change.

As a landscape architect you have the possibility to deepen your knowledge of how the dynamics of vegetation can be used to create long-term, robust designs that change with time and provide new experiences. This can be achieved by using naturalistic plantings. Historically, naturalistic plantings have been successfully used to provide recreational environments in the city fringe. If one were to implement this idea to an urban context instead, the plants would face different demands and situations, which give landscape architects a possibility to explore new ways of using naturalistic plantings in the city.

Over the last decennium, densification and urbanisation has led to the transformation of old industrial sites and harbours into new residential areas. This trend has created a challenge for landscape architects to create new green places and spaces for people in environments imprinted by industry. Gothenburg is currently undergoing large regeneration projects in the old industrial sites surrounding Göta River. In one of these areas, Frihamnen, a large city park is going to be built: The Jubilee Park. The goal with this thesis was to explore how a new, robust city park with strong character can be created by using naturalistic plantings, and how it can evolve through time.

The design proposal was created using a method in three parts: preliminary study, design and presentation. The preliminary study included three sections: a document study, a literature study and a study trip. In part two, the design of the Jubilee Park was performed. The design process was conducted parallel to the preliminary study and consisted of several different phases performed simultaneously. All the phases resulted in an overall design proposal where the theory of naturalistic plantings was applied to the Jubilee Park with regards to the design and structure of the vegetation from a 50-year perspective. In part three, Presentation, illustrative material was created explaining the final proposal to the reader.

The result of the design process is a park with naturalistic plantings, which focuses on the long-term development of the vegetation. The vegetation in the proposal consists of five different mixtures of species, responding to three main characters. Roughly, the development of the mixture of species is divided into 3 stages, during which the vegetation is shaped by different maintenance actions.

The discussion raises the problem of designing something that has a very long implementation time. A lot can happen in fifty years that prohibits the proposal from reaching its final form, for example climate change, changes in the building development plans and multiple changes in maintenance staff in the municipality. However, changes in the original design are expected, and the use and foundation of naturalistic plantings makes sure the park adaptable for the future.
