Abstract

Contemporary landscape planning and management discussions argue for the need to develop new approaches which relates to the emerging global challenges such as climate change and urbanization. It seems evident that there is a need for planning and management approaches which includes several scales, even if the task is to solve a local problem. In an urban context, there is a need to introduce urban nature (for the delivery of ecosystem services), even on locations which today may be characterized as non-sites (a place with primarily gray infrastructure, buildings, closed drainage systems and limited room for nature).

Therefore, the outset for this thesis was to propose an approach which would take its outset in the local context (the location / place), while being defined by the urban context, and relating to the overall regional scale. In order to optimize the delivery of ecosystem services, the approach even related to the specific biotope scale.

Inspired by the recent concept of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and in order to grasp the magnitude of scales, the concept of Ecotones was applied on four different landscape scales (regional, urban, place and biotope). Our outset has been theoretical, combined with interviews of two significant practitioners, who both work on multiple scales while applying NbS. We have developed a new approach and applied it on a specific location in the Oslo region describing narratives related to the outset of the proposal, as well as the future perspectives of the proposal. Thus, this approach describes a vision more than a specific design proposal which should be seen as a major outcome of our work.

This project exemplifies how landscape architects via a long term perspective can support the evolvement of urban ecosystems, with a combined NbS and Ecotone approach. Finally, this project argues for the importance of identifying places in the need for natural connectivity by mapping landscapes’ spatial and ecological relations.
