Abstract

Klarabergsviadukten is located directly west of, and is an extension of Klarabergsgatan in Stockholm, Sweden. It is an important part of the connection between Centralstationen (Stockholm’s Central station) and Stockholm's most central parts. Klarabergsviadukten was build during the functionalism in the 1960s, when the ideals were in many way the opposite to today’s thoughts about city planning.
With its central location in connection to Stockholm's Centralstation Klarabergsviadukten functions a part of an important traffic node. The City of Stockholm is currently in the final stages of the rearmament of the adjacent Klarabergsgatan. The purpose is amongst others to develop Klarabergsgatan into a place for meetings, temporary events with a rich city life.
In the light of the change of Klarabergsgatan we see the possibility to through a design proposal create the next part of the link between Centralstationen and the central parts of Stockholm. The aim of the study is to design Klarabergsviadukten as a room for travelling according to ideas about the development of future cities and the sites complex conditions. A node for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport in a future city.
We have chosen to work with the proposal from a design theory perspective. A design problem means a huge amount of questions with an unlimited amount of answers. It is a process where problem and solution constantly influence each other. Sketching has been our primary method throughout the entire project. It has been a dialogue with the site and its conditions.
We have worked with spatial analysis to examine the sites problems and possibilities. As ideation we used futures analysis where we examined what was possible to change with the site. We used three different types of a futures analysis: intuitive sketching, sketches from questions and scenarios.
The background study gives the site a historic context. The main focus is theories about what creates a good urban space. The construct node is central to the proposal and the definition is taken from Kevin Lynch. The central idea the node in combination with the concept railway embankment gives the proposal its form. A place for movement and staying with a clear spatial character.
The proposal is built on five elements: floor, seating, water, roof and lighting. These elements gives the site a clear function and a cohesive character.
Trough the process many questions have come and gone. The questions we had in the beginning are not the same that we ended up with. The working procedure have come to an end but the questions remain to future projects.
The question that arises is if the proposal is realistic in today’s society. We gather that there is a clear will from both the City of Stockholm, experts and researchers to create a city where the cars space is limited. The reality however is something else. We see our proposal as a contribution to the debate about how the future city can be designed.
