Abstract

Sphagnum peat is currently used widely in many areas of horticultural production. Due to the impact of peat extraction on the environment there are incentives to try and find a suitable substitute which entirely or partly can replace peat. Previous efforts to find a substitute that possesses the same adequacy and functionality of peat has been made difficult due to the excellent physical and chemical properties of peat. Biochar consists of organic material which has undergone thermal decomposition in an almost oxygen free environment (pyrolysis) and has been attributed with having suitable properties as a soil enhancer or growing media component. Because the properties of biochar varies depending on feedstock and conditions during pyrolysis, no generalization should be made about the properties of biochar. Instead, properties of specific biochars needs to be examined. Further, the effect of biochar mixed with other soil or media depends on the characteristics of the specific soil or medium.

In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of biochar mixed with composted bark and peat at different proportions were examined. Tests were made before, during and after a period of regular irrigation to observe any variation of properties. The conclusion were drawn from the results of the tests that the mixes have potential as suitable substitutes for peat as growing substrates.
