Abstract

Chequered-Gap-Shelterwood-System is a management system that is not commonly used today but have the possibility to combine the benefits from both clear cutting and Continuous cover forestry. However, it is important to examine the effects of the method in detail before a large-scale applica-tion can be established.
The purpose of this study was to examine if a satisfied natural tree regenera-tion and scattering of tree lichens could be obtained ten years after a felling with a Chequered-gap-Shelterwood-System. Growth differences were also studied for tree plants and tree lichens with consideration to distance from forest edge and cardinal direction. The aim with this study was to acquire more knowledge that shows if this method could favor both forestry and reindeer herding in terms of lichens.
The study took place just south of Gällivare in a Chequered-Gap-Shelter-wood-System with 40x40 meter sized gaps. A total of 14 gaps, 14 shelter-woods and one reference area close by were inventoried. The number of main- and secondary plants, height growth, stem volume and the occurrence of lichens were recorded within the gaps. The longest thallus and number of tree lichen clumps was estimated in the shelterwoods. In the statistical anal-ysis, variance analysis was used and Two sample t-test with 95 percent con-fidence interval.
The results showed that the natural tree regeneration was in average 2400 plants per hectare, which is sufficient according to forestry legislation and that tree lichens were scattered all over the gaps. However, the results showed no edge effect that affected the volume growth of plants within the gaps or tree lichens biomass in the shelterwoods. Also, no effect of cardinal direction were shown for either the tree plants or the tree lichens. The bio-mass of tree lichen was twice as high in the Chequered-Gap-Shelterwood-System compared with the reference area.
The conclusion is that Chequered-Gap-Shelterwood-System can give an ac-ceptable tree regeneration within the gaps according to the forestry legisla-tion and the tree lichens can in same time develop and spread fragments from the remaining trees to the upcoming tree generation within the gaps.
