Abstract

Avenues are an architectural tradition that in Sweden dates back several centuries. They play an
important role as form elements in landscape architecture and make up a significant part of urban
tree population. Many cities seek to increase the diversity among street trees. Addressing the question
of avenues composed of several species and their aesthetical potential in urban environments should
therefore be an important task for landscape architects. A functioning avenue design that includes a
diversity of tree species could enhance the experience of the avenue and create an interesting space
to be in and travel through. This paper seeks to answer the question of how to design an avenue with
visually different species by a design proposal of a fictious street space. The method used to achieve the
final proposal included litterature studies, interviews with experts, study excursions and sketching. The
selection of species was made through the concept Sociala träd (’Social Trees’) in order to bring attention
to the interaction of the constituent trees. The tree composition was made based on Nick Robinson’s
five principles of visual composition: harmony/contrast, balance, visual energy, sequence and scale.
The design proposal called Filmklubben (’the Movie Club’) resulted in an avenue consisting of several
visually different tree species with a focus on spatiality and experience. The main ideas of the proposal
is found in the shape and size of the constituent trees, the interplay among them and the variation of the
tree composition over time through a succession model. By choosing visually different species a variation
can be seen in the crown volume, the character of the leaf and branch texture and the changing of colours
through the seasons. The avenue is renewed continually, albeit gradually, in different rejuvenation stages
by only removing a few of the trees a the time. The whole process from planting to aging is an intentional
and integral part of the proposal and makes the avenue take on different shapes depending on what stage
it is in. Including aspects such as visual dissimilarity and succession in avenue design has been and
still is uncommon in landscape architecture. Given the endless number of tree compositions and design
possibilities of avenues the image of what an avenue is might have to be broadened and the terminology
regarding avenues extended in order to encompass more nuanced ideas of avenues.
