Abstract

`When one does not have what one wants, one
must want what one has´: `I have had, you see,
to resort more and more to very small, almost
invisible pleasures, little extras....You´ve no idea
how great one becomes with these little details,
it´s incredible how one grows. ´

The aim of this master thesis is to find words and
expressions that can accompany city phenomenas
as well as the people wandering through the space
which is defiened as city. Through this tentative
search a new term was found namely Urban
Settler Marks. This term started a journey and an
attempt to theoretisize why people have a need for
various spaces to put their Urban Settlers Marks
onto. My focus was drawn to electrical boxes in
the urban environment because of their ambigious
nature. The hidden function of distributing
electricity on one hand and as a publication space
for individuals, cultural activities, streetart, flea
markets on the other hand. The second function
is unplanned but applied by many. A study was
made to reveal some parts of the electrical boxes
functions in the urban landscape by interviewing
the owner of the boxes, the municipality and of
course an illegal placardist.

Questions asked on it´s way of determining what
Urban Settler Marks actually consists of was;
What is an Urban Settler Mark? Where do they
appear? What impact can they have on urban
planning? How can a term or expression help
people to talk and grasp stigmitized subjects as
graffiti and illegal placarding?

Att samla på ord och begrepp som kan vara ledande
för att beskriva ett stadsklimat, vardagspraktiker
och de människor som läser staden under tiden de
rör sig. Detta är arbetets ansats. Urbana Bomärken
blev ett samlingsord för diffusa handlingssätt och
behov som människor har i en stad nämligen den att
punktmarkera och märka objekt på sin väg genom
staden både nära sin bostad eller flera kilometer
bort. En tankefärd påbörjades genom att mynta
begreppet urbana bomärken vilket kom att resultera
i ett försök till teoribildning kring varför människor
och staden som miljö har behov av fästytor av
alla dess slag. Frågor som ställdes på vägen var:
Vad är urbana bomärken? Var uppkommer de?
Vilken betydelse kan urbana bomärken få för
stadsplaneringen? Hur kan ett begrepp hjälpa till att
tala kring stigmatiserade ämnen såsom klotter och
illegal affischering?
