Abstract

This study is focused on a farm located on the north of the island Gotland. On the farm
there are about 200 ha of fields and pasture and about 100 ha of forest. The production
today is 80 beef cattle and 250 ewes of the Gotland sheep breed with spring lambing and
the farm is run organically. The reasons for this study are to evaluate the possibilities to
end the beef cattle production and increase the numbers of sheep. On the farm there are
three stable buildings which are all built with three walls and roof and cover totally
2500 m2
of concrete floor. They are all placed next to smaller pastures.
To make this study as adequate as possible we have made several visits to large
producers and have done interviews with people working as sheep advisors.
The system used for feeding the sheep today is rational and easy to work with but it is
not optimal for sheep production. The amount of feed that is spoilt is too high and to
decrease that we want to put in new feed racks. Silage and hay will be blown from the
outside to the feed racks using a bale processor. In this way the feed will be cut into
smaller pieces which will make it more desirable for the sheep to eat and they will drop
less on the ground. Concentrates will be fed in automatic feeders controlled by a
computer and with transponders on all ewes.
We suggest that in the new production there will be about 800 ewes; about 400
crossbred ewes that lamb in January for spring lamb production and 400 Gotland sheep
ewes for fall lamb production. We want the production to be split to get the work and
also the income more spread out over the year.
The skins of the Gotland lambs are today sold for about 250 Swedish crowns a piece. In
the future there are big opportunities to sell the skins directly to the customers and get as
much as 1000-2000 crowns for each skin.
According to our calculations the new production will be more profitable than the
current one on the farm. The fact that the EU:s support for farming might be cut back in
the future also makes the new production more interesting, because even without the
money from the union the new production has a better profit.
