Abstract
Erasteel Kloster AB Söderfors have been commissioned by the county administrative board in
Uppsala län to make an inventory of possible contaminations in theirs industrial- and landfill areas on the basis of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's; "Method of Surveying Contaminated Sites-phase 1" (MIFO-fas 1). The inventory starts with maps and archive studies, place visits and interviews, and finally a risk classification is done. A risk classification is a compilation of four categories; pollutant toxicity, contamination level, possible spreading condition of the pollutant, sensitivity and protection value of the environment.
In this paper five partial areas (Holmen- and Jörsöområdet, Järnsvampsområdet,
Ingsådeponin, Östra verken and Myrområdet) have been described from a historical point of
view. Only parts of four areas have been risk classified (Holmen- and Jörsöområdet,
Järnsvampsområdet, Ingsådeponin and Östra verken), due to that the other areas isn't own by Erasteel Kloster AB.
Holmen- and Jörsöområdet
Holmen- and Jörsöområdet have during the entire activity time been carried out as the
production core in the company. An amount of different buildings and processes have
occurred in the area through the years.
The area has been classified within risk class 2 according to MIFO-fas 1. The reason to this was a compilation of the pollutants toxicity was assessed as very high, the contamination level that was assessed as very high in soil and groundwater, the possible spreading condition in soil and groundwater was assessed as high to very high and in surface waters it was assessed as small. Sensitivity for soil and groundwater was assessed as moderate to high and the Protection value as moderate, for surface waters and sediment the sensitivity was assessed to be high and the protection value to be very high.
Järnsvampsområdet
The first production plant in the area was a Westman rust oven (the third generation) that was built in 1861 in order to render more effective process. Productions continued in the area for about 100 years, when a new industrial site where built. Now days only a small production of ASP-steel (ASEA-STORA-process) is processed in a building called Flexiplant.
The area has been classified within risk class 2 according to MIFO-fas 1. The reason to this was a compilation of the pollutants toxicity that was assessed as very high, the contamination level that was assessed as high in soil and groundwater, the possible spreading condition in soil and groundwater was assessed as high to very high and in surface waters it was assessed as small. Sensitivity and protection value for soil and groundwater was assessed as moderate to high, for surface waters and sediment the sensitivity was assessed to be high and the protection value to be very high.
Ingsådeponin
The landfill is on old bogs and wetlands and in the 1930s or 1940s the area started to be used as a landfill. Rest products from processes and waste products from both industrial and municipal activities where deposited within the area.
The area has been classified within risk class 2 according to MIFO-fas 1. The reason to this is a compilation of the pollutants toxicity that was assessed as very high, the contamination level was assessed as very high in soil and groundwater, the possible spreading condition in soil and groundwater was assessed as moderate to high and in surface waters it was assessed as small. Sensitivity and protection value for soil and groundwater was assessed as moderate to high, for surface waters and sediment the sensitivity was assessed to be high and the protection value to be very high.
Östra verken
Östra verken have a short history and was built in 1940 and 1950s. In one part of the area that is owned by Erasteel Kloster AB, rest products (slag and bricks) are stored before reprocessing both external and internal, only this area has been risk classified in this paper.
The area has been classified within risk class 2 according to MIFO-fas 1, identical to an
earlier performed MIFO-fas 2 survey. The reason to this was a compilation of the pollutants toxicity that was assessed as very high, the contamination level was assessed as high to very high in soil and groundwater, the possible spreading condition in soil and groundwater was assessed as very high and in surface water it was assessed as small. Sensitivity and protection value for soil and groundwater was assessed as moderate, for surface waters and sediment the sensitivity was assessed to be high and the protection value to be high to very high.
Myrområdet
Earlier the area was a huge bog, this was changed gradual through deposits (for example: slag and mill scale) that were carried out during the end of 1920s until some time at the end of 1950s. Today the area is a caravan site with a public bath, a small beach and a small marina.
AB.
