Abstract

Öppna ytor som släpper fram solen är vanligt att se i offentliga rum i det skandinaviska klimatet och sittplatser, stora som små, är ofta placerade i soliga lägen. Att solen kan vara skadlig för människor under sommarmånaderna är känt. Men att solens strålar kan vara skadliga även under den tidiga våren är inte lika uppmärksammat och inte heller behovet av sittplatser i skugga under denna årstid. Det är inte självklart att alla människor i urbana miljöer vill njuta av solen på samma vis. I den här uppsatsen undersöks därför om man kan alternera användningen av skugga och sol i uterummet under vårvintern, med syftet att undersöka hur miljön kring en sittplats kan gestaltas för att ge olika upplevelser av skuggor. Metoden som används för att undersöka frågan är idégestaltning. I metoden används förstudie och analys som inledande moment. I samband med analysen görs en fotodokumentation av olika typer av skuggor i urbana uterum. Skisser och idéer från förstudien och analysen testas gällande hur olika typer av skuggor kan falla över en urban sittplats och resulterar sedan i ett gestaltningsförslag av ett fiktivt uterum. I resultatet framkommer det att det finns många olika typer av skuggor, både från träd och annat växtmaterial samt från andra byggda element. Resultatet antyder också att det finns fler egenskaper hos skuggorna än bara själva skugg-avtrycket på marken. Till exempel är många skuggor rörliga och föränderliga och beroende på markmaterialet kan skuggorna te sig mycket annorlunda och ge olika upplevelser för den som betraktar dem. Idéer och teorier om hur man kan gå tillväga vid gestaltning av en plats i skugga sammanställs i ett antal programpunkter. Avslutningsvis diskuteras att det möjligen kan komma att finnas en större variation i hur man gestaltar med hjälp av skugga i framtiden och att sådan gestaltning kan prioriteras framför planering av soliga ytor i uterummet. Den förväntade vikten av skugga i ett, framtida, varmare klimat diskuteras även, samt om skugga möjligen kan uppfylla andra mänskliga behov än svalka och skydd från solen såsom estetisk fascination, avkoppling och rehabilitering.

In public places in the Scandinavian climate it is common to see seating placed directly in a sunny location. It is well known that the sun can be harmful to people during the summer months. But the solar radiation can be harmful even in the early spring and that is not as well known, nor is it common to see urban seating in the shade during this season. You cannot assume that all people in urban environments want to enjoy the sun in the same way or under the same conditions. In this essay it is examined if you can vary the use of shade and sun in the outdoor public space during the spring with the purpose to study how the area around a seat can be designed to offer different experiences of shadows. The method that is used to investigate the question of the essay is a design method with idea-making perspective where the first step is a background literature study and analysis. In conjunction with the analysis, a photo documentation of various types of shadows in urban spaces is made. Sketches and ideas from the literature study and analysis are tested in how different types of shadows can shade an urban seating and are summarized in a program. Parts from the program then results in a design proposal of a fictional sketch of an outdoor seating. In the result it appears that there are many different types of shadows, from trees and other plant material as well as from other built-up elements. The result also implies that there are more characteristics of the shadows than the actual shadow prints on the ground, for example, many shadows are moving and changing depending on the material of the ground material. The shadows can therefore be very different and provide various experiences for those who witness them. In the end of the study the variation of sun and shade in the outdoor public space is discussed. The importance of shadow in the future when the climate is expected to be warmer is also discussed, and finally if shadow could meet other human needs than the practical ones, cooling and sun protection, such as aesthetic fascination, relaxation and rehabilitation.
