Abstract

Exclusion through landscape architecture in public spaces is something that is increasingly getting more attention both globally and in Sweden. From a North American perspective, the phenomenon is not novel, but in Sweden it is only recently that the subject have been noted. Therefore, there is little knowledge and research about the subject in a Swedish context. Although the landscape architect has an obvious role in designing public spaces, the research is often conducted in other scientific disciplines. This research review aims at compiling and comparing literature about exclusionary landscape architecture, and making the theory available to landscape architects. The intention is to serve as a help for landscape architects to relate to exclusionary landscape architecture and as a basis for further discussion. The summary shows that exclusionary landscape architecture consists of constructed elements and spatial designs that prevent the occurrence of certain groups of people and certain behaviors. Exclusionary landscape architecture can have as a direct purpose to exclude certain groups of people, but it can also work exclusionary even though it is not listed for the purpose. According to our study, a common motive for the use of exclusionary landscape architecture in the public space is to increase security and to make the city space attractive. We believe that exclusionary landscape architecture in the public space should be handled with great care and awareness, as there is a risk that the presence of it makes public space less democratic.
