Abstract

Hundar under konvalescens får på grund av sin skada eller sjukdom ofta begränsat med fysisk aktivitet. Fysisk aktivitet förser hunden inte enbart med rörelse, utan kan även ge hunden mental stimulering. I de fall hunden inte får mental stimulering kan hunden bli understimulerad. Hundar under konvalescens bör därför erbjudas mental stimulering med fysisk aktivitet som är anpassad efter hundens individuella behov och skada. En form av mental stimulering som kan rekommenderas är födosök.

I det här arbetet utfördes en litteraturstudie samt en djupintervju. Syftet var att undersöka den vetenskapliga dokumentationen som finns för födosök som mental stimulering för hund under konvalescens och jämföra med de rekommendationer som ges på Universitetsdjursjukhusets (UDS) rehabiliteringsavdelning för smådjur.

Litteraturstudien visade att födosöksövningar kan användas för hund, men att inga specifika övningar har undersökts. Djupintervjun visade att UDS rehabiliteringsavdelning rekommenderar födosöksövningar till hundar under konvalescens.

I litteratur nämns födosök ofta som ett naturligt beteende för hundar, men en tydlig definition saknas i den undersökta litteraturen. Utifrån den funna litteraturen och utförda djupintervjun tycks födosök vara mentalt stimulerande för hund. Faktorer, såsom matmotivation, tidigare erfarenhet, personlighet och djurägare, skulle kunna påverka utförandet av födosöksövningar. Födosöksövningar under kontrollerade former bör dock kunna användas för hundar under konvalescens under förutsättning att de är individuellt anpassade efter hundens behov samt skada. Vidare studier krävs.

During convalescence canines often get limited physical activity due to its injuries or illness. Apart from inducing movement, physical activity often gives canines mental stimulation as well. Canines can become understimulated if they are not given enough mental stimulation. Therefore, canines should be provided with mental stimulation that is in accordance with the needs and injury of the individual canine. One type of mental stimulation that can be recommended is foraging.

For this study, a literary review and an in-depth interview were made. The aim of the study was to review the scientific documentations of foraging as mental stimulation during convalescence and compare with the recommendations given at the rehabilitation unit for small animals at The University Animal Hospital (UDS).

The literary review showed that foraging can be used as mental stimulation for canines, but that no specific foraging tasks has been investigated. The rehabilitation unit at UDS recommends foraging tasks for canines during convalescence.

Foraging is often described as a natural behaviour for canines, but no clear definition can be found in the investigated literature. In view of the literary review and the in-depth interview, foraging seems to be mentally stimulating for canines. Factors, such as food motivation, earlier experiences, personality and the owner of the pet, might influence the practice of foraging task. However, the practice of foraging tasks during convalescence should not cause any concerns, if it is performed under controlled forms and individually fit with accordance to the needs and injury of the canine. There is need for further studies.
