Abstract

Networks of streams and water movement in the soil affects a large part of the forest land in Sweden. Water transports materials and nutrients between different parts of the landscape. The use of heavy machines while managing the forest can lead to rutting and soil compaction. Rutting and soil compaction can lead to a change in the local hydrology. The problems connected with rutting has been observed by several actors within the forestry sector and has lead to a bransch of industry-wide policy addressing the problems. Forest soils bearing-capacity is connected to the soil moisture content and negative effects of rutting are more prominent on moist and wet soils. The soil moisture is commonly field-classified in five classes describing the long-term soil moisture condition. The bearing capacity is field-graded in a scale ranging from the values 1 to 5. The bearing capacity is graded using the soil moisture, soil art, texture and vegetation. The soil moisture can be computer modelled by using digital elevation models and algoritms that describe the flow of water in the soil. The computer modelled soil moisture can be used to identify areas that are more prone to being moist and wet.
In this study the computer modelled soil moisture is compared to field-classified soil moisture. The computer modelled soil moisture is represented with a Relative Wetness Index (RWI). 522 field-plots within a study area of a radius of 150 kilometers from Lycksele city centre was field-visited. At each field-plot variables on soils moisture, vegetation, soil art, texture and incidence of ditches was observed and collected. The bearing capacity was determined by using the collected variables. k-Nearest Neighbour (k-NN) was used to classify the computer modelled soil moisture into soil moisture classes corresponding to field-classified soil moisture classes. The computer modelled soil moisture was also classified with k-NN to correspond with field-graded bearing capacity. The soil art has a big impact on the reliability of classification of the computer modelled soil moisture. On soil arts determined as moraine the computer modelled soil moisture can be used to identify areas that are more prone to being moist and wet. The incidence of ditches does not affect the reliability of the classification of the computer modelled soil moisture to any greater extent. Classification of bearing capacity using the computer modelled soil moisture has low reliability.
