Abstract

We humans have always made use of wetlands in order to provide food, fuel and water. Recently researchers also have discovered the potential of wetland for cleaning wastewater. This paper is about the processes in wetlands, and how we can use them to our advantage. Nitrogen and phosphorous, which today along with environmental toxins are the biggest threat to the Baltic prosperous, are so called population regulators. This means that if there are les of those nutrients plants grow slow and large amounts can make plants and especially algae soar in its production. This is creating problems in nature when we emit large amounts of both substances in to the sea, partly from ourselves by feces, and partially exhaust as a leak from food production. In food production nutrients primarily comes from the feces of livestock and excessive use of fertilizers, both manure and chemical fertilizers. During the 19-2000 hundreds Swedish peoples wanted more agricultural land. By removing wetlands and lowering lakes, which were seen as unproductive, they got more. By doing so, they took away large amounts of wetlands, particularly in southern Sweden's rural areas. When they took away the wetlands they did not just remove a water purifier in the landscape but also the water buffer that lakes and wetlands are. Without the buffers a system rinses the water faster through the system and it ends up in the recipient, the end goal, mainly a lake or the sea. This can lead to cities and towns far downstream in the water easily being flooded during heavy rains. Through the creation of wetlands we can bring these functions and more back in the landscape. This work is about how the wetland functions work and how to use them to society's benefit. Mainly it takes up the aspects of water purifying and water buffering but it also takes up aspects of biogas production, biodiversity and food production (hunting).
