Abstract

rörande havrebladlusangrepp i korn under 2012.

The World is a world in change and its population grows continuously. It is unsustainable
to continue to use the resources in the way that has been done during the last decades. To
be able to feed the world with food without draining the world of its resources the human
being needs to rethink. As the number of effective insecticide substances decrease due to
their damaging effect on people and environment, solutions researchers are studying today
are the possibilities to enhance the pest predators. This could be the largest change in
agriculture since the green revolution.
This thesis looks at the problem with pests in the grain production. The scientific
question that is analyzed is: Could the crop diversity affect bird-cherry oat aphid
damages in spring barley and could the grown land area of leys and cereals affect the
amount of bird-cherry oat aphids? There are a large number of solutions to the problem
with pests in the agricultural sector, some of them are: Access to woodland glades,
forests and grassland. The grasslands function as predator host for predators as carbides
and spiders during the winter is well known. But the effects of leys during the summer
are quite uncertain. Some papers demonstrate large effects of predators at the same time
as some other papers did not find any effects of the predators at all.
The aphid data are collected from Växtskyddscentralens barley crop protection forecast.
The plots are situated in Västra Götaland in Sweden and the chosen year was 2012. The
coordinates were used in a Gis program called Qgis. In Qgis a circle was drawn with a
1000 meter radius. The Swedish Board of Agriculture’s data about land usage was used to
determine the land usage in the circles. The Shannon diversity index was used to calculate
the crop diversity. Then there was a linear regression done to analyze if there were any
correlations between the different coordinates and aphid densities. The results are quite
uncertain but there might be some effects. An interesting result is that the aphid problem
seems to decrease with larger land areas with cereals. This could be referred to three
different facts: the first of them are some kind of dilution effect that some scientists found
out in a project studying spruce beetles. Another reason could be that a rather complex
surrounding gives a lot of different species to predate on for the generalist predators and
the importance of bird-cherry oat aphid as a food resource is then reduced. Other research
point out crop diversity as the most important thing for ground living beetles’ possibilities
to survive and predate aphids. But the results are still too uncertain and it is hard to draw
any conclusions.
