Abstract

Detta arbete är en litteraturstudie av sojaodlingar i Brasilien, vars expansion har varit markant framför allt under de senaste decennierna. Expansionen bidragit till diverse negativa konsekvenser utöver producenternas bemötande av omvärldens efterfrågan. Dessa konsekvenser inkluderar bland annat utbredning över betydelsefulla naturområden som avskogas för odlingens skull och hälsoeffekter på människor på grund av de bekämpningsmedel som används i odlingarna.
Syftet med studien är att undersöka odlingens omfattning och följder i Brasilien, med störst vikt på vilka bekämpningsmedel som används. Effekterna som användandet av bekämpningsmedlen har på människor som lever och arbetar i sojadistrikten beskrivs. Även aspekten miljö- och naturpåverkan tas upp. Målet är därmed att redogöra, och öka förståelsen, för en komplex verklighet av en global industri inom jordbruket. Studien avslutas med en diskussion om resultatet och en konklusion som besvarar frågeställningarna.
Litteraturstudien resulterar i konstateranden om att sojaodlingen är en av de största orsakerna till att den brasilianska savannen cerradon, men även Amazonas regnskog, huggs ner. Giftiga ämnen som glyfosat och parakvat används för att kontrollera ogräs i sojaodlingar, även olagliga ämnen förekommer. Det finns flera studier som tyder på samband mellan en exponering av de bekämpningsmedel som används i sojaodlingarna och ett flertal sjukdomar. Olika intressena styr sojaodlingens omfattning och odlingsmetoder. Industrins konsekvenser är inget eget isolerat problem utan ingår i en betydligt större kontext.

This work is a literature study of soybean cultivation in Brazil, whose expansion has been significant particularly during the last decades. In addition to the producers’ response to the global demand, the expansion has led to various consequences, including expansion over meaningful natural areas that are deforested for the sake of the production and health effects on people because of the pesticides used in the plantations.
The aim of this study is to investigate the extent of the cultivation and its consequences in Brazil, with most emphasis on the pesticides that are used. As such, the effects that the use of pesticides has on people living and working in soy districts are described. Also, the topic of the environmental and natural impacts is addressed. The overall idea of the study is to understand and explain the complex reality of a global agricultural industry. This study contains a discussion and a conclusion for the research questions asked in the introduction.
In its findings, the literature study reveals that the soybean cultivation is one of the main reasons why the Brazilian cerrado, and also the Amazon, is deforested. Toxic substances, such as glyphosate and paraquat are used to control weeds in the plantations and illegal substances are present. There are several studies that show a link between an exposure to the pesticides used in the production of soybeans and resulting cases of disease. Different interests control the extent of the soybean cultivation and its methods of production. The soybean industry does not exist in isolation; its actions have an effect outside of the industry.
