Abstract

This essay shows the importance of outdoor life for elderly people with dementia and the garden as a tool to improve the quality of their lives. The composition is a study of literature where the material has occurred from a snowball effect; one source led to two new, which in turn led to four new sources and so on. This results in a couple of guidelines for designing custom gardens for people with dementia. There is an importance of safety and independency in the garden, so that the residents can feel free and secure. The persons suffering from dementia need a calm but stimulating environment in their everyday life. Research has shown positive results in patients spending time in this type of gardens.
By using different familiar elements in the garden you, can create an environment where the residents feel safe and are able to navigate. The path is the most important element for this, but vegetation and different objects can also be significant for how persons perceive their surroundings. Landmarks can give the residents information and guide them. But it is of importance that the landmarks used are familiar to the residents because abstract art and objects are hard to process for people with dementia. In worst case, the residents obtain negative feelings and they perceive the art more stressful than beautiful.
Benches and the likes provide opportunities to gather groups of people and socialize, but it is also a chance to get away. Both larger places that has the capability to gather groups and small spaces where the residents can ”hide” for a moment, makes the garden a more desirable place. The weather is a large factor that influences the residents to go out or not. To prevent disaffection, the patio needs shelter against both sun and wind. The garden becomes a room where activities can take place and also give an opportunity to “just be”. To shape the garden so it will give impressions and stimulation for a long time over the year makes the selection of plants important.
Some of the plants can be evergreen, but if the majority of the material withers, the garden becomes more vivid. The alternation in the nature follows the seasons and gives the residents a better sense of how changeable and inconsistent life is. For all residents' safety, no plants can be toxic or induce allergic symptoms. As said before, it's positive if the plants are familiar to the residents, but it is effective with some new material too. It can diverge from the other plants and be a topic of conversation among both residents and staff.
If the architect is successful in shaping the garden, there is a great chance to give the person with dementia both gratification and quality of life.
