Abstract

Många städer vill utveckla vattenkontakt, tillgängliggöra och öka den urbana vattenkvaliteten. Gatukontorets programenhet i Malmö stad beslutade 2012 att ett program för stadens kanal skulle tas fram. Jag blev involverad i detta arbete och beslutade mig för att även skriva mitt examensarbete om detta ämne.

Målet med uppsatsen är tredelat; att ta fram ett program för Malmös kanal, att beskriva och reflektera över programmet, samt att föra en bredare diskussion kring urbant vatten.

De metoder jag använt mig av för att färdigställa arbetet har varit inventering, analys, intervjuer, arkiv- och kartstudier, litteraturstudier, workshop samt en form av introspektiv efterreflektion.

Resultatet har blivit ett program för utveckling av Malmös kanalrum, samt en beskrivning och reflektion av programskrivandet, dess kontext och arbetsprocess samt en reflektion kring urbant vatten.

Frågan om stadens relation till vattnet är ytterst aktuell, dels för att vattnets och och de angränsande stadsrummens värde som rekreationsområden och sociala arenor ökat markant, men även för de utmaningar vi står inför med klimatförändringar och en höjd havsnivå. Att genom planeringsdokument hitta välgrundade och framsynta förhållningssätt är en viktig pusselbit.

Many cities want to develop their contact to the waterfront, to increase the quality of the urban water and make it more accessible. The municipality of Malmö town decided in 2012 decided to produce a programme for the canal running through the old parts of the city. I became involved in this project and additionaly decided to write my masters thesis on the subject.

The aim of the thesis is split into three subdivisions; one is to produce a program for the Malmö canal, the second is to reflect upon and analyze the programme and the process and context around it and thirdly to conduct a broader discussion on urban water.

The methods I have been using in order to complete the thesis have been an inventory, analysis, interviews, studies of archives and maps, litterature studies, a workshop and a form of introspective after-reflection.
The result has become a programme for development of the canal waterfront in Malmö, a description and reflection upon the production of the programme and its context, and also a reflection on urban water.

The relation between the city and its waters is highly topical, partly because value of the urban water and its near surroundings as recreational ares and social arenas has increased immensely, but also due to the challenges we are facing with climat changes and rising sea levels. Finding legitimate and forward-looking approaches through planning documents is an important piece of the puzzle.
