Abstract

The positive health effects of being outdoors have been scientifically proved and it is essential that the elderly, too, can profit from outdoor environments in different ways. The possibilities of being outdoors at nursing homes depend on structures in the physical, social and cultural environment. The objective of this study is to investigate which possibilities and obstacles there are for the residents to benefit from their outdoor environment. My theoretical approach has been affordances in the environment and a sense of coherence. A nursing home based on salutogenic care and access to an outdoor environment, which provides many opportunities, has been studied. In the salutogenic care a sense of coherence is created through meaning-fulness, comprehensibility and manageability. The results of this study show that there is an interaction between environment, organization, management, residents’ attitude and ability and attitudes of the nursing staff. This interaction creates a sense of coherence among the
residents. By offering/participating in different activities, individually or in groups, both the staff and the elderly obtain a sense of coherence, which increases their well-being. The pre-requisites of benefitting from the outdoor environment are good organization, and committed staff which support and entice the elderly to go out. The possibilities and obstacles are experi-enced very differently among residents and staff. Resulting from field studies and in-depth interviews, different aspects, that affect the possibilities and obstacles to being outdoors, are shown in this work.
