Abstract

The growing interest in our cities' identities is due to the post-industrial structures where a modern and attractive city intends to attract tourists, residents and businesses, which in return will generate economic growth. To ensure local growth, competition among cities has increased with a growing interest in cities identities as a result. This is made visible through brand strategies and policy documents for the city's future development. The urban environment is an important aspect in how a city is perceived and therefore, many cities develop programs for urban design which present guidelines for the physical elements such as the cities ground covers, furniture and lighting. The combined effect of how these elements are designed is paramount to how the physical environment is perceived and thus the city as a whole. My starting point in this work is that the urban environment as a functional and aesthetic space is becoming increasingly important as an arena for the city's residents and decision makers. When the cities want to attract productive and creative people, which are seen as attractive in the competition for local growth, the cities need attractive environments where the inhabitants want to live their life. The objective of this essay is to try to describe how and why a city's identity has become increasingly important in the growth of the post-industrial cities and to explore how a city's identity is affected by its urban environment. The essay begins with a general theoretical discussion of cities and their identity in relation to how the society is developing. This is followed by studies regarding the urban environments affect a city's identity. I also present programs for urban design as a guidance for the development of the urban environment. In order to make the essays introductory parts more understandable I use the development of Malmö in relation to the essays more theoretical parts. Finally a picture study of Gustav Adolf's Torg's design is presented to show how Malmös identity and program for the design of the urban environment is physically applied.
