Abstract

The field of landscape architecture deals with a range of different aspects when attempting to form stimulating environments. All senses matter in the perception and cognition of a place, though my experiences of the design process is that visual expressions has precedence. In this work I’ve therefor chosen to explore landscape from an auditory point of view.

The essay consists of a literature study intended to bring forward the potential in sound for landscape architecture. Elemental acoustic principals and human ability to apprehend sound is included to set a foundation for how experience-based objectives could take physical shape. Also theories on the development of soundscape and attitudes
towards it are attended. Thereto a selection of terms which has evolved from an interdisciplinary approach to the acoustic environment is described. The results are then discussed in a completive part focused on the feasibility of managing acoustics within the landscape architecture discipline.

Hence sounds are emotionally embedded in the human being it
makes an excellent mean to influence atmosphere. It also mediates vital information regarding navigation and communication. Since place, activity and sounds correlate, acoustics appear to be an essential component in the shaping of landscapes.
