Abstract

sommaren 2011.
I gestaltningsarbetet användes bland annat Experiential
olika metoder parallellt.

Our cities are constantly changing in appearance. Different times have different
needs, and thus changes are inevitable. Landscape architects are often faced with
the task of redesigning a place. Aesthetic as well as functional factors have to be
considered during the design process. Also, all places are part of a wider context
with historical, geographical and cultural aspects. Eventually, the designer has to
decide his own approach in these matters. In old environments, the history of the
place most often must be taken into consideration during the design process. In
this thesis, a redesign project, which was performed by me earlier during the
summer of 2011, is presented. The project concerns the inner courtyard of
Linnégatan, which is situated in a historical environment within the city core of
Uppsala, Sweden. The different phases of the design process are presented by
text and images. The aim is to contribute with a concrete example of how design
can be made in environments as such, regarding methods, decisions and results.
This thesis was made by studying the final material of presentation from 2011,
and other documents from the work of planning by then. During the design
process, Experiential Landscape Analysis and the Dilemma-Thesis Method were
used. These methods helped me to identify important aspects during the work, as
well as finding solutions that were made in consideration to both functional
demands and aesthetic values. Many questions rose during the design work. The
questions that a landscape architect often is faced with, are for instance how the
relationship to the history of the place can be combined with the needs and
wishes of today. These questions are complex, and the result is often a
compromise. In the thesis, I show how I dealt with my approach to the historical
context regarding this case in relation to demands of functionality, and how
compromises were made in order to meet the wishes of the inhabitants. Through
the design process of the Linné inner cortyard, many important lessons could be
made and conclusions drawn. I consider it to be crucial for the final result to
avoid late surprises in the process. Also, other important factors for a well
functioning design process are good contact with the client and the inhabitants,
revisiting the place during the work process and also working in parallel with
different methods.
