Abstract

Still existing parks founded during the 19th century often has a distinctive character which differs from those constructed today, for example regarding size and contents. What signifies the particular characters of these parks constructed for more than hundred years ago? The 19th century was eventful in many ways, and the developments affected how people lived. Many moved from the countryside to cities as the industrialisation progressed, which led to new needs and ideas for what should be included in the city. The bourgeoisie was a trendsetter for the urban community and many types of new institutions were constructed, such as within the university field, hospitals, schools and railway stations, and were typically surrounded by a beautiful, educative park. The purpose of the thesis has been to understand these parks constructed to represent the new institutions.
The university city of Lund is an interesting example of the development of a city. The city has historically been a prominently religious residence as well as early founder of an academy, which founded the character of a city of learning. Also, an interesting development during the second half of the 19th century took place: the city centre drastically developed new buildings and parks. The new structures were not only adapted to the existing medieval city structures within the city walls, but were also placed outside the city walls. This enabled an expansion of academic institutions, the hospital and residential areas. I chose to work with sites in Lund because of the city’s distinctive historical image combined with its expansions of the new institutions during the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
A study has been made consisting of five institutional sites in Lund, constructed between 1870 and 1920, to come to a deeper understanding of which shapes and materials they contained, how the representative parks were connected to the buildings and why. The studied sites were Universitetsplatsen in Lundagård, the physical, physiological and anatomical faculties next to Biskopsgatan, Bantorget by Grand Hotel, Dövstumskolan next to Dalbyvägen and Lindebergska skolan by Clemenstorget. Bantorget represents the whole railway site, including Grand Hotel and the railway station, which can be seen as one entire site and institution. The research questions has been:
• Which materials and shapes did the studied representative parks contain? Which factors influenced the choices of materials and shapes?
• Which were the unifying and separating features of the park’s materials and shapes and how did the buildings and parks interact? Why are the features unifying and/or separating?
• Could the studied sites represent representative institutional parks in Lund between 1870 and 1920, regarding materials, shapes and interaction with the buildings?
The research questions have been reviewed through reading site plans, maps and photographs, reading litterature about the sites, history of parks, gardens and buildings, as well as about the urban constructions of Sweden and Lund. Visits to the sites have also been made.
The five parks have been divided into three types of different institutions important in Lund during the second half of the 19th century and the two first decades of the 20th century: the university, rail way and school. The university and school sites have been analysed and compared in pairs: Universitetsplatsen with the physical, physiological and anatomical faculties and Dövstumskolan with Lindebergska skolan. Bantorget has been compared with a model plan of how the rail way environments should be formed. The study has analysed which materials and shapes the parks consisted of and why, and the impression of the wholeness of the park together with each institutional building. Then, a comparison between all five sites have been made, followed by a summarising conclusion.
The reviewed sites included a variety of materials and shapes, depending on factors such as the purpose of the institutions, their location and status. Despite the varying factors, the contents of the institutional parks followed the contemporary dominating trends of the public parks, such as order, variation, shapes from architecture and landscape architecture of past epochs of time and new, exotic plants. The institutional buildings were also dominated by contemporary ideals, foremost through historicising characters. Together with the surrounding parks, the sites expressed unity, mainly connected through the parks’ formal, symmetrical shapes.
Four out of five of the reviewed institutions were educative, which shows Lund’s strong connection to knowledge and its identity as a city of learning. The values of the bourgeoisie regarding self-education, as a means to climb in the society, were shown through these new institutional sites and their forms. It also examplifies the leading position of the bourgeoisie in the contemporary society. The driving force towards education established the city’s identity as a city of learning and made the city unique as it was neither dominated by industry, trade nor regiment, which was the case in many other Swedish cities.
The sites had more unifying than separating features. They were united by showing a combination of historicising, nostalgic characters, based on nature-like features and soft lines resembling the English park together with formal, symmetrical lines resembling baroque and renaissance gardens. Consequently, the sites shared similarities with the contemporary public park ideals during the second half of the 19th century. Another unifying feature was the mix of exotic and indigenous plants. The indigenous plants put a traditional mark on the parks, while the exotic plants and varieties were new features and gave the sites a significantly modern expression. The same trend of exotic and indigenous species was seen in other contemporary gardens and public parks, which means that they were not only used in the representative parks at the new institutions.
The connection between the institutional buildings and the parks were strong. The formal shapes in the park connected in different ways to the building, through for example a straight colonnade leading through the park to an accentuated main entrance, or symmetrically arranged paths. The historicising impression of both the buildings and parks also added to the strong interplay. The unified character of the institutional sites could be seen in for example castle and mansion sites. Despite that the bourgeoisie formed a new social rank in the 19th century, creating its own identity and new ideas about the development of the society, one can note that they still turned to previous epochs of time for inspiration, in this case to the traditions of the aristocracy.
It does not appear to have been a unique character of representative parks by the institutions in Lund, during the studied period of time. The parks are more likely to have been constructed through contemporary trends of public parks and gardens, which were based on the different socie tal tendencies based on nostalgia and hopes for the future; traditions and new technique. The institutional buildings were in the same way based on contemporary architectural trends. Considering that many of the features reappeared in the reviewed sites, they are likely to summarise representative institutional parks in Lund during 1870 and 1920. The representative parks and buildings were not unique compared to contemporary trends, but were still distinctive in how they amplified the city’s identity of learning, its high status as well as expressed disciplin and self-education, in the expanding, unfolding 19th century.
