Abstract

During the 1970s Sweden and Norway provided proof that the acidification of lakes and forests was due to emissions from other countries in Europe. This contributed to the convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution in 1979 to reduce emissions of long spreading air pollution the convention has since been expanded to include heavy metals. As a follow-up of the convention a number of programs started through the International Cooperative Programmes (ICP) within UNEP. IM (Integrated Monitoring) was established to monitor the impact of long spread air pollution in Europe and had initially focus on acidifying substances such as sulfur and nitrogen. Anthropogenic sulfur and nitrogen are deposited as acid rain over northern Europe. The acidification caused by these anthropogenic acids lowers the pH of the soil and lead to leaches of important base cations. When the soil becomes strongly acidified aluminium and other metals begin to leach from the soil and are transported by ground water into streams and lakes. Where there may be adverse effects on fish and other aquatic organisms. The non-bio essential heavy metals cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) have a net accumulation in Swedish forests today which means that the metals concentrations are increasing in Swedish forests.
In this study, the solubility of iron (Fe), aluminium (Al), manganese (Mn), magnesium (Mg), sulfur (s), phosphorus (P), sodium (Na), potassium (K), zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca) was studied. The solubility of the substances was compared between each other, between test sites and soil horizons to investigate how the solubility varies. The influence of pH on the solubility of substances was also investigated. Iron, aluminium and sulfur had generally higher solubility in the lower soil horizon (55 cm– 65 cm) mineral soil and in catchment where the water table affect the redox conditions in the soil. The solubility of sodium, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus could largely be explained by the pH of the soil. It is important to study the solubility of substances in different parts of the catchment to see where substances accumulate or dissolves in the ground water. Especially if there is an increased leaching of substances over time, above all leaching of iron or aluminium have toxic effects on the ecosystem.
