Abstract

The challenge of breeding against the inheritable disease canine hip dysplasia has for decades occupied dog breeders. Unfortunately, the results of the breeders’ efforts have been disappointing. The aim of this literature study was to investigate why the results have not been more satisfactory as well as what is being done to improve the breeding programmes today. The aim was also to find out why the results from the breeding programmes differ among breeds and also among countries. I have been looking into the mode of inheritance of hip dysplasia to understand the relationship between breeding strategies and breeding progress.

Breeders who are not taking the breeding programmes seriously seem to be contributing to the poor breeding progress. Since the development of hip dysplasia is influenced by several genetic as well as environmental factors the traditional phenotypic selection might not be selective enough.

Within the next couple of years, breeding values will be introduced to differentiate among individuals with the same phenotype. Breeding values are estimated through the results of different family members and are also corrected for environmental factors. More accurate estimations of the genetic values of the dogs are obtained and the breeding value makes it easier to identify animals that are suitable for breeding. The results of the new program will hopefully be more evident. Evidences of different quantitative trait loci affecting the development of hip dysplasia have been found in several studies. However, further research is needed before this information can be used in a genetic test to reveal carriers of genes predisposing for hip dysplasia.
