Abstract

Syftet med mitt mastersarbete är att undersöka hur utformningen av stadens rum påverkar social hållbarhet och koppla detta till ett gestaltningsförslag. Den tävling som är föremål för mitt arbete utlystes av Park- och Naturförvaltningen, Göteborgs stad, och var en allmän arkitekttävling för ett parkstråk vid Selma Lagerlöfs torg i stadsdelen Backa, Göteborg. Social hållbarhet och det gemensamma livet stod i fokus för tävlingen. Jag utarbetade ett tävlingsbidrag för parkstråket. Tävlingen och min gestaltningsprocess har legat till grund för de fortsatta studierna. Utifrån en uttolkning av sociala hållbarhetsaspekter i stadens tävlingsmaterial och i min egen designprocess har jag vidareutvecklat diskussionen och hittat principer och strategier inom landskapsarkitekturens domäner som kan främja dessa sociala värden. Jag har utarbetat två tabeller (tabell 1 på sida 54, och tabell 4 på sida 58-59) som på ett förenklat och överskådligt sätt presenterar en rad grundläggande principer för hur man som landskapsarkitekt kan arbeta. Hur principerna tar form i en gestaltning beror på platsens förutsättningar och dess brukare. I tabell 4 presenteras dessa grundläggande principer i relation till de tillvägagångssätt jag använde i mitt tävlingsförslag. Dessa tillvägagångssätt speglar min tolkning av begreppet och är de designverktyg jag använde för att konkretisera och platsförankra dessa sociala värden.
Mitt arbete belyser samtidigt frågans vidd och komplexitet. Under arbetets gång har många nya aspekter framkommit, viktiga att behandla i gestaltandet för social hållbarhet, jag har urskiljt aspekter som helt saknas i mitt gestaltningsarbete eller behöver vidareutvecklas. I Del IV fördjupar jag mig i dessa framkomna aspekter med hjälp av litteraturstudier och för en diskussion utifrån mitt arbete. Då platser och människors behov är olika finns det inga självklara vägar att gå men mitt arbete ökar medvetenheten om vilka konsekvenser gestaltningen kan få. Beslut kan vägas och stärkas utifrån dess inverkan på olika människors brukande av stadens rum. En viktig insikt är brukarnas ansvar och betydelse. Samtidigt ansvarar kommunen och andra ledande myndigheter för att medborgarnas demokratiska rätt till inflytande och brukande av stadens rum tillgodoses. Genom mitt mastersarbete och andra arbeten som bidrar till att formerna för att aktivt arbeta med sociala värden som landskapsarkitekt utvecklas kan stadens rum ges bättre förutsättningar för social hållbarhet.

The aim of my thesis is to examine how the design of public space affects social sustainability, and to link these studies to a design proposal. The subject of my work is a public architectural competition organized by Park- och Naturförvaltningen, Göteborgs stad, for a park by Selma Lagerlöfs torg in the neighbourhood Backa, Gothenburg. Social sustainability and common life were the focus points of the competition. I developed a design proposal for the park. The competition and my design process constituded the basis for the further studies. I have developed a discussion through interpretations of aspects concerning social sustainability in the competition documents from the city and in my own design process, and found principles and strategies within landscape architecture that can support these social values. I have worked out two tables (Table 1 on page 54 and Table 4 on page 58-59), to in a simplified and transparent way present basic principles of how a landscape architect can work. The practical dimension of these principles depend on the local context, site conditions and the people using it. Table 4 present the basic principles in relation to the approaches I used in my competition entry. These approaches reflect my interpretation of the concept and are the design tools I used to concretise these social values in a local context.
My work also highlights the great extent and complexity of the issue. During the process, many new and important aspects concerning social sustainability has emerged, I have identified aspects that are missing in my design or need to be further developed. In part IV I examine these aspects and deepen the discussion through literature studies. Since places and people’s needs are different, there are no obvious answers. However, my work increases awareness of the affects and consequences of landscape architecture. Design decisions can be considered and strengthened on the basis of their impact on different people’s utalisation of public space. An important insight in my work is the responsibility and importance of the users. Meanwhile it is up to the municipality and other leading authorities to assure the citizens democratic rights to influence and utilize public space. My thesis and other studies that contribute to the knowledge and relation of social values and landscape architecture can help in the development of urban space supporting social sustainability.
