Abstract

In this study we investigate the specific requirements children who are admitted to hospital have with regards the outdoor environment, with a particular focus the development opportunities of the outdoor environment for children. The study highlights how the outdoor environment can, in connection to the play therapy offered at Sachsska children’s hospital based in Stockholm, support the healing process and how environmental psychological perspectives can contribute in this context. Through interviews and walking interviews with the individuals involved in play therapy, their thoughts and ideas are described about what improvements could be made to the outdoor environment. Furthermore, the play therapy perspective is discussed from an environmental psychology perspective. The results in the empirical studies show that the Sachsska children’s hospital has deficiencies in a number of respects and various suggestions for improvements are proposed in order to give the children staying at the hospital a homelike outer environment that supports recovery and restoration. In the last part of the study it is discussed how knowledge about restorative outdoor environments can be incorporated in to play therapy’s outdoor environment, and by doing so, creating a restorative place for all the children, regardless of age, staying at the hospital.
