Abstract

Det är sedan tidigare känt att risken för mjukdelsskada i munhålan ökar när hästar brukas med betsel i munnen, därtill har det visats att en stor del av den svenska ridhästpopulationen har skador i munhålan som kan korreleras till användandet av bett. Tävlande travhästars munhälsa och den utrustning som används vid tävling är ett ämne som diskuterats och debatterats i media, trots detta har travhästar aldrig undersökts efter lopp för vetenskapligt ändamål. Syftet med denna studie var att utreda om tävlingsmomentet ökar risken för skada i den tävlande travhästens munhåla. Studien utfördes i samarbete med Svensk Travsport (ST) som slumpmässigt lottade ut hästar för munhåleundersökning efter travlopp. Sammanlagt deltog 144 hästar från olika delar av Sverige. Undersökningen gjordes med hjälp av en munstege och en fiberoptisk lampa, ingen av hästarna gavs lugnande medel. Skador i främre munhålan bedömdes efter grad och storlek och registrerades i protokoll, liksom övrig information om hästen, dess huvudlag och det aktuella loppet. De tävlande hästarna jämfördes sedan mot en retrospektiv kontrollgrupp från en studie av travhästar i träning undersökta i sin hemmiljö. Resultaten visade att tävlande travhästar har en signifikant högre andel akuta skador för givna anatomiska regioner i munhålan jämfört med hästar som enbart tränar för tävling. Flera riskfaktorer för skada kunde identifieras, såsom loppets distans, tävlingsgren samt typen av utrustning som användes. Studien kunde bekräfta hypotesen att tävlingsmomentet påverkar förekomsten och omfattningen av skador i främre delen av munhålan hos travhästar.

It is commonly known that the risk of soft tissue injury in the oral cavity of horses increases when ridden with bit and bridle. It has further been shown that a large portion of the Swedish horse population has lesions in the oral cavity that can be correlated to the use of a bit. The oral status of the racing standardbred horse has been debated over and over again. Despite this, it has never been investigated if and how the oral health of horses is affected by racing. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the element of competition increases the risk of injury in the oral cavity of the racing standardbred horse. The study was performed in collaboration with the Swedish trotting association (Svensk Travsport, ST) that randomly selected horses for the survey. A total of 144 horses from different parts of Sweden participated. The horses were examined post racing without the use of sedatives. The mouth was opened with a mouth gag and rinsed with tap water and then the rostral part of the oral cavity was then examined using a fiber optic lamp. Soft tissue injuries were assessed by grade and size and registered in a protocol, as well as further information about the horse, its racing tack and race. The participating horses were then compared to a retrospective control group of trotting horses in training examined in their home environment. The results showed that racing standardbreds have a significantly higher percentage of soft tissue injuries at given anatomical regions of the oral cavity compared to horses that alone train for competition. Several risk factors for injury could be identified, such as the distance of the race and the type of equipment used. The study could confirm the hypothesis that the element of competition affects the existence and extent of soft tissue injuries in the rostral part of the oral cavity of racing trotting horses.
