Abstract

Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) och Partial
FPT.

Mare’s colostrum is very important for newborn foals since they are born without antibodies.
Failure of Passive Transfer (FPT) is defined as an insufficient absorption of maternally derived
antibodies in the foal and is a contributor to secondary diseases such as sepsis. The authors are
not unanimous regarding what levels of immunoglobulins should be used to diagnose FPT and
PFPT. Usually an immunoglobulin level less than 2 g/l in serum is used to diagnose FPT and
an immunoglobulin level of 2-8 g/l is used to diagnose PFPT. The occurrence of FPT may
depend on a variety of things and it’s advantageous to be able to diagnose the illness as early
as possible in order to start an early treatment.
The illness makes the foal more sensitive to infections and therefore hygiene is very important
when handling these foals. Hygiene around the support feeding is very important due to the
immunological status of the foal.
Administration of nutrition can be done in different ways and the choice of administration is
dependent on the foal’s condition. Nutrition can be administrated through the enteral or
parenteral route.
There is no specific recommendation for the support feeding of foals with FPT since there is
insufficient or no research done on the subject. But all the authors of studied literature have all
agreed that hygiene is very important in management of foals suffering from PFPF and FPT.
The hygiene is important to protect the foal against secondary infections.
