Abstract

What does ecological garden design really mean and what shape can it take in a place where re-sources are extremely scarce and local strategies for energy, water supply and waste is lacking? This thesis presents a design proposal for the garden of N’tendele ecolodge, located in Me-ponda, the northern part of Mozambique. The thesis touches upon subjects such as ecotourism and ecological approaches concerning garden design as well as it declares the geographical context and discusses and social aspects in the area where the project is taking place.
This design proposal aims to adapt the spatial ideas and needed functions to the current cli-mate, landscape and social conditions. In order to do this, we have sought inspiration from both local sources as well as relevant international li-terature. Being landscape architecture students in a foreign environment where the conditions are nothing like home, our worldview as well as our design principles have gone trough new dimensions. Therefore, transparency has been strived for when reporting the data impacting our design choices.
A circular process signifies the work where in-ventories, interviews and dialogues, literature studies and study visits have been repetitive elements. Data from these methods have later been analysed to understand specific qualities, necessary needs and important principles that can function as design guidelines.
The result is a design that has compromised many different interests and aspects. As desig-ners we have had to make choices in several occurring conflicts, in particular ecological theories contra the owner’s visions for N’tendele lodge. Other important factors that has had part in limiting or creating possibilities for the design is management knowledge, social needs and pragmatic aspects.
